The Wilson administration, amid cabinet unity, prepares for forceful action against German submarines. Sixty submarine chasers ordered with 200 more bids to be opened. Navy plans extend to active cooperation with Britain and France and potential naval service for women.
At Philadelphia Navy Yard an escape attempt by fourteen interned German sailors ended with two believed drowned and eight captured. Lieutenant Chorth and Mate Schroeder were among those missing, with eight more netted by marines and police.
David D. Overton and six other inmates under death sentences escaped from a county jail in Birmingham Alabama this morning after overpowering the inside warden and a turnkey. Police believe the group fled north in a waiting automobile and that Overton's appeal to the Alabama Supreme Court was automatically dismissed.
