Near the Mexican border at El Paso United States soldiers and immigration officers exchanged fire with smugglers. Three American immigration officers were wounded as Mexicans fired from across the Rio Grande and were believed hit by return fire.
El Dorado reports a massive gas well near Sundown with violent pressure and ongoing bailing as the Midsouth Oil Syndicate E and W No. 1 faces a slow, uncertain fix. Residents fear the roaring outlaws’ blast and potential crater formation while public utilities face outage criticism and delays in new equipment delivery.
Washington reports say prohibition leaders in congress aim to tighten the Volstead law. A House judiciary committee reorganization will draft amendments for the extra session next month. The lineup is 15 Republicans and 6 Democrats with seven seats to fill, mostly on the Democratic side. President Harding was advised today of a western push for an immediate embargo on certain farm commodities including cotton and cottonseed oil.

In Sumner County Tennessee Tom Mitchell a prosperous farmer living at Cottontown was shot dead at his door by men in an automobile. A short distance away the body of an unidentified man was found along Red River road. Motive remains unclear and no suspects are named. Mitchell leaves six children and was described as well to do and respected.
The J Harrison Rhymes deep test well near Monroe north four east will be re advertised for sale in April on twelve month credit without appraisement. Sheriff sale of remaining equipment occurred March 5 to Millsaps and Montgomery as attorneys for Lester and Howard. The well at 2980 feet could be developed 1000 feet deeper in hopes of pay oil.
Herbert Thompson and John Baldwin of Monroe were reported missing in Goulds Bayou Swamp near Millhaven eight to ten miles from Monroe. A hunting party led by Dr. Robert Faulk and F. S. Pettit set out yesterday after they failed to meet at 7 p m. Their absence sparked a large search, with horns and rifles used to signal as dawn broke.
State conservation commissioner M. L. Alexander in New Orleans pressed a centralized authority to manage Ouachita gas fields. He noted Monroe carbon industries burn about 80 million cubic feet daily, versus New Orleans use of 8 million, and cited Bastrop glass factory and a prospective paper mill each needing well under a million cubic feet.
Washington report says Allied occupation of more German territory was presented to President Harding as a new issue tied to changed conditions and an early Congress declaration ending the state of war. Harding is portrayed as seeking caution to avoid complicating the fragile crisis.
A driven scene at First Baptist church opened the $75,000,000 campaign with a devotional by S W Sproles and talks by F C Flowers and Rev G J Rousseau. Rousseau, born in South Africa, recounted his travels and urged pledges. City and out of town attendees filled the Monroe hall. The drive aims to fund orphanages and future work in Louisiana.
