Washington reports an extra session of Congress before June 1 appears certain to officials and lawmakers. Republicans expect a two month extension to finish appropriations and other bills stalled in the last session while President Wilson stays in France.
Nighttime burglary at C. A. Green & Co liquor house at 504 DeSiard Street thwarted as thieves tamper with rear door but flee before tapping the safe. Officers pursue with bloodhounds, tracing through the saloon to the Missouri Pacific depot before vanishing. Crew and others had earlier shot at a suspected intruder in nearby shop.
Paris March 18 The Allied peace delegation says Germany is unlikely to be required to surrender all battle ships. Ultimate warship ownership to be decided later. Kiel Canal tolls may be used to fund maintenance, and Kiel Canal access to all nations is considered. Fortifications on Helgoland to be dismantled and Hei‑ nang may serve as a port of refuge.
General Pershing lauds American women for their part in the war during a Third Army evacuation hospital inspection. He credits nurses and home supporters for America’s able conduct and steadfast loyalty in France and at home.
Brussels March 18 German government agrees to deposit 450000000 francs in gold in Urwus national banks as part of an accord. The agreement has not yet reached full implementation.
In Ellerhe Washington March 18 the American Red Cross announces a nationwide drive next week for used clothing and shoes. Members are urged to participate, collect items, and send them to local Red Cross chapters for packing and shipping. Hoover will oversee distribution in Europe.
New York reports arrival of 70 officers and 1588 men with tanks aboard the former Europa from Marseilles. They form the 106th British Tank Corps and include detachments from the 805th.
The dipping vat at C. D. Rocks plantation four miles south of Monroe was blown up for the second time. No suspects yet. authorities believe vandals seek to avenge Mr Brooks after his barn fire. Parish rebuilt the vat after prior destruction and plans to relocate it. Dr Yoder leads tick eradication efforts and vows to arrest those responsible.
A public dispute targets the Cotton Export Corporation over a proposed fifty million dollar confession or loan arrangement. Rik serves on the board as advocate.
Governor Harding proposes a cooperative cotton export corporation with up to 50 million dollars capitalization. The group could be financed in part by the War Finance Corporation and stock paid with Liberty bonds. He urges a congress of cotton producers and business leaders to discuss the plan and notes the need for organized cotton sales channels against current market conditions.
Stacy Walker a colored man was fatally stabbed by John Goree a colored man at Lenwis around 11 o clock Monday night. Goree allegedly stabbed Walker in the heart and slashed the wrist severing arteries and tendons. Deputy John Rogers reported the case to the sheriff early today. Goree fled and remains at large. He is described as a medium built 30 year old negro about 5 feet 11 inches tall 160 pounds from Stamps Ark with a gold front tooth and a half length red and black striped overcoat.
President Wilson will meet with Premiers Lloyd George Orlando and Clemenceau at the Paris White House. The conference replaces a session of the Supreme Council which is postponed until tomorrow to allow today’s gathering of Peace Conference leaders.
Charley Neathery colored was arrested this afternoon on a warrant sworn by Florence Watkins alleging he assaulted her with a shotgun with murderous intent Monday afternoon. Neathery lives on a plantation near Millhaven and his wife is among two representatives from this parish confined in Caddo parish jail.
Mr L R Powers proprietor of Help Yourself Grocery announces the opening of a second store at the DeSiard and Third streets corner. He has rented the building from Citizen's National Bank and will make changes at once. He cites success of his first store and expects similar results.
Fire crews responded to a small roof blaze at 909 Calypso Street shortly after 1 PM. The quick extinguishment left an estimated damage of 25 dollars with no injuries reported.
Ouachita parish draft board prepares records for shipment to Washington and receives high praise from Adjutant General Cecil C. McCrory and Government Inspector Nole. Mrs. L. B. Faulk, chief clerk aide, is commended for her meticulous work ensuring accuracy and compliance with Selective Service regulations.
Washington March 18 Internal Revenue Commissioner Rover plans to seek a Justice Department opinion on the authority to enforce the rule barring beer containing one half of one percent or more alcohol. The issue follows New York brewers announcing a return to making beer above two and three fourths percent alcohol, deemed non intoxicating. If upheld revenue officers would halt shipments of higher alcohol beer. Anti Saloon League leaders press the war time prohibition act to curb sale after July 1.
Montgomery March 18 The decision by Federal Judge H S Clayton author of the Clayton antitrust law interpreting the cotton futures act conflicts with Judge Youmans ruling at Ft Smith Ark Clayton holds that the contract form used by the New Orleans and New York Cotton Exchanges complies with the futures act and does not preclude recovery on contracts fed by these exchanges.
Dispatches report continued demonstrations in Korea over the weekend. The National Independence movement is described as extensive and well organized in several strong provinces, signaling broad support.
A burglar attempted to enter the residence of Ernest K M Broadnax on Calypso Street during midnight Monday, breaking two windows before the prowler fled. Tracks were found in the garden and Sheriff McClanahan, with bloodhounds, may be called if funds allow. Police Inspector Heap notes the sheriff's hound service costs 25 dollars.
Jefferson City March 18 in a joint session Senator Reed criticized the proposed League of Nations. He argued it would impair American sovereignty abrogate the Monroe doctrine violate the Constitution and create a world government forcing the United States into global policing obligations. He rejected claims that decrees would be advisory noting the league’s actions would be mandatory and command the world.
In Lawrence Massachusetts on March 18 police faced a violent disturbance as shots rang from tenement houses during a textile workers parade. Officers were stoned and crowd members clubbed amid widespread arrests, marking the fiercest clash of a six week strike.
