The Vanguard three stage rocket launched at 6 16 am from Florida amid cheers as it climbed vertically for over 10 seconds. Instruments showed the stages separated and the 6 4 inch nose sphere aimed for an 18000 mph orbit joining Explorer I and Sputnik II in a bid to circle the earth.

Six individuals pleaded guilty to traffic violations in Fourth District Court. James D. Thatcher and Travis E. Woods were fined 300 dollars and costs or 90 days jail for operating a vehicle under the influence. Woodrow W. Booth paid 50 dollars and costs for reckless driving. Eddie Sims 30 dollars, Melvin Silk 30 dollars and 25 dollars, and B. C. Washington 25 dollars and costs faced lesser charges.
MAIDCO officials criticize lagging support for the Ouachita River nine foot channel project filed since Congress authorized it in 1950. They note a 6.5 foot current channel with old manual locks hampers transport and urge local citizens and agencies to back funding efforts.
Funeral services were held yesterday for G Henry A Thomas associate manager of the E F Huton Co investment firm and former owner of a Hammond lumber business. Burial was in Covington where he had lived the last 10 years. The 63 year old Thomas was a native.

The Louisiana contingent at the National Industrial Development Exposition includes Curt Siegelin and Mike Safer of Baton Rouge with leaders from New Orleans area chamber groups. The team plans both a booth presence and direct outreach to New York industrial executives to attract plant expansion and development opportunities.
West Monroe issued building permits totaling $33,000 in the past week. A F Cooper received permission to build a brick veneer residence, 1362 square feet, at 113 Mallard Street, cost about $10,000. Steel Lumber Company authorized for a brick veneer house, 1400 square feet, at 1416 Woodland, cost $12,000. R L McIntyre approved a brick veneer home, 1491 square feet, at 101 Mauldin Street, cost $11,000.
Mrs. Francis Martin, 78, formerly of Bastrop, died early today at her daughter’s home.
The deceased, a West Monroe resident, will lie in state at 1522 Bennie Breece St. until two hours before funeral, with services at Dean Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Survivors include husband E J Martin, two daughters Annie Faye Halsey and Katie Dawson, son Walter Harper, four step-daughters, a stepson, a sister, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. The service is under Kilpatrick Funeral Home.
