The Lancaster County jury deliberated 4 hours 45 minutes before returning the verdict, marking the county's first death sentence in murder cases. Gibbs' attorney announced plans to appeal.

New Orleans March 17 Deputy Sheriff Ed Guidry of Norco said he expects to make an arrest shortly in the shotgun slaying of 41 year old Mrs Leo Montz of Montz. We have several leads the deputy said though he would not reveal them. Mrs Montz was found murdered in her Little River home 30 miles west of here when her husband returned from work. She had been shot twice. Neighbors heard shots about 15 minutes apart but thought hunters were behind the levee. Coroner Dr J E Clayton said the slayer must have been a madman. The first shot was fatal. Hours after the death the slayer turned her body over face down. Officers found no motive for the crime.
Tucker State prison farm Ark March 17 a former taxi driver Hollis Edward Needham 26 Blytheville Ark was hanged for raping an eight year old girl in his taxicab at Blytheville last May He died at 7 38 a m CST after being traced from Blytheville to Hattiesburg Miss where he was arrested The trial jury returned a verdict of rape as charged carrying an automatic death sentence.
Ingrid Bergman returns to the United States as her husband Dr. Peter Lindstrom prepares to contest custody of their 12 year old Pia. Lindstrom’s counsel says he will seek divorce and an equitable distribution of property while Bergman’s attorney expects her to testify in what could become a tense courtroom drama.
A sudden walkout by A F L compress and warehouse workers tied up three large cotton compresses on the Houston ship channel. Over 1,000 members from locals 1581 and 1525 of the International Longshoremen's Association struck at midnight after talks collapsed. Compresses at Gulf Atlantic Warehouse Long Beach plant, Manchester Terminal, and Alexander Sprint and Sons were barricaded, with picket lines at all dock entrances. Others not involved were expected to join by refusing passage past pickets.
Belzoni Miss March 17 Three children drowned in backwaters near Belzoni when two skiffs overturned. One boat with six children sank, claiming Hazel Abel 13 and Abel Fuller 10. Howard Gilmer 11 and J C Gilmer 12 died when their boat capsized while saving others. four children were rescued.
Three inmates fled Monroe City Jail Thursday night using a torn blanket rope ladder from a southwest window. The escapees Carlton Eugene Heckford 21 Russell Law son 26 and A. J. Tennehill 40 were not yet apprehended by Friday morning. The same window and method had been used in an earlier escape this week.

Lloyd H. Sidener, 44, former president of United Mine Workers Local 7455 in Canton, says John L. Lewis secretly ordered miners not to heed the Feb. 11 court injunction and continue the strike. Sidener cites a system of secret signals used through the ranks to sustain the action.

A 39-year-old St. Louis advertising executive Joe Getlin and his two sons Joseph 12 and Mike 10 were rescued from the Mississippi near Memphis after a five‑foot wave swamped their 18‑foot canoe as they pressed a trip to New Orleans. Rescuers Austin and Perry Christian, brothers from Friars Point, rushed in by motorboat after locals spotted trouble. The trio had started from Memphis the previous Wednesday and planned to reach New Orleans by March 24.
Washington March 17 The House Republicans proposed a new 3 billion dollar cut to the 30.3 billion dollar lump sum appropriation bill already trimmed by 120 million. The measure follows President Truman’s budget plan for the 1951 fiscal year starting July 1 and would be debated by the House Appropriations Committee and on the floor March 27. The cut excludes foreign aid funds and permanent and indefinite appropriations, which total about 12 billion. If enacted the deficit would drop from about 4 billion to 1 billion, as GOP leaders press for near balance. Rep. Taber said the bill should be around 26 billion. Continued on Eleventh Pages.

Alexandria March 17 funds pour in for the Al Leger polio fund to aid infants with paralysis treated at Hot Wells. The drive aims to turn Hot Wells into a warm Springs like facility, with a goal of several thousand dollars after Al Leger Pine Prairie returned home due to funds shortage. Leger reported remarkable improvement while taking the baths. Hot Wells and bathhouse are state owned and operated.
GALVESTON Tex March 17 A new organization the Teacs property defense association will fight for Texas ownership of tidelands on oil rich shores. Leaders say the issue goes beyond oil, stressing self government. Gov Allan Shivers urged officials to organize as meetings plan in Louisiana and other states. Supreme Court ruling on California tidelands cited. Texas case set for March 28.
The U S fifth circuit court reversed and remanded a tax refund dispute by South Coast Corporation of New Orleans. The court ruled the IRS erred by not allowing extra information to prove the refund claim for $224 424 since the tax was paid before the Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional.
Key West reporters and residents greeted President Truman during his eighth visit as locals teased him with questions about “ol Har ry.” Truman, weighing about 175 pounds per his doctor, joked about a four pound loss while resuming his vacation routine of gulf swims sunbathing naps and poker. A cat alarmed Mrs. Eva March by scratching at her bedroom door and waking her as a blaze swept through the home. Mrs. March, her husband, four unmarried children, a married daughter and her husband and grandchild all escaped. the house was badly damaged.
