March 15 Rouas notes a rapid push for rural parish book requisitions in a national literacy drive. State superintendent Morton says most orders come from rural parishes while major cities lag. totals list parish by parish figures such as Caldwell 100, Catahoula 840, East Carroll 1080, Ouachita 1900 and Webster 1080.
Louisiana banks show assets of 590 million plus for 1928 with deposits totaling 432.99 million. Gains over 1927 include 22.16 million in resources and 14.78 million in deposits across 33 national and 159 state banks.
Baton Rouge March 15 The annual R O T C inspection at Louisiana State University will occur April 21 with Majors W E Duval and G H Franka arriving from the Fourth Corps in Atlanta for a two day visit. Inspectors rate units as excellent satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Paris fencing master Georges Dubois presides over about 20 duels annually with one fatality recorded from a novice strike.
Floods swept the Mississippi gulf coast with rapid water rise in the Tom Bigbee river and Self creek. A Columbus Mississippi message said the Columbus Aberdeen highway was closed and W T Putnam of New Orleans was rescued from his submerged car. Hail damaged greenhouse lights and strawberry crops near Hammond Louisiana while Amite Franklinton and nearby routes were blocked by rising waters. Travel between Claiborne and Covington halted by Bogue Falaya overflow and Slidell cut off as Tchefuncte bridge failed. Local bridges washed away along Natalbany river and several games of closure persisted across northern Mississippi and Florida parishes.
Roy Hidalgo of Opelousas bred White Plymouth Rock hens and set February records with 23 eggs in 28 days. His pen of White Rocks produced 167 eggs, earning second in pen laying. Hutches of Baton Rouge led high pen records with ten White Leghorn hens laying 185 eggs in February. Thirty three Louisiana breeders participated.
New York March 15 inspired to patriotism, Mrs. George F Kunz, wife of Tiffany vice president, learns to fly. She notes an ancestor fought in the Revolution and predicts women will fly planes in the next war as they drove cars in the last.
King Christian of Denmark visited the Cannes track during a Riviera visit and bet the limit in all six races. Sympathetic associates say his limit amounted to four dollars.
Work on the new addition to Martin Hall at Southwestern Louisiana Institute has begun and is slated for completion in about six months. The state legislature appropriated about $60,000 for the project, with the contract let by the state board of education.
George Francis Yamasheta passed examinations for the police force. He is described as capable of handling himself and comes from Osaka through his father, with a mother named O'Connell.
A coastal revival is being held in Fairbanks led by evangelist L C Walden from Wesson Arkansas. Services run nightly starting at 7 30 o clock.
Baton Rouge expects the Louisiana Chamber of Commerce to hold its annual meeting on March 20. Herbert Bayliss says the morning includes executive committee talks with the Louisiana Association of Commercial Executives and a flood control committee session, with a directors meeting and general membership gathering in the afternoon followed by a Hotel Heidelberg dinner.
Mias Iris Davenport of Louisiana State University clothing specialist will judge the Louisiana section of the 1929 National Borden Fabrics Dressmaking contest in New Orleans. The Maison Blanche sponsored event is open to school girls with thousands expected to participate. Top scorers earn ribbons and entry to the national contest with multiple prize levels up to 300 dollars for the championship dress.
Baton Rouge March 15 Postal receipts for Louisiana for the fiscal year ending June 30 1928 totalled 5 445 053 17 dollars an increase of 32 942 55 dollars over the previous year figures issued by the Louisiana chamber of commerce show the rise in receipts statewide
C. L. Jones, executive secretary of Louisiana’s new state board for the blind, will travel to Missouri in April to study the state association and commission for the blind. The board also decided to establish a permanent executive office in Baton Rouge.
