In Newport New Hampshire a 17 year old boy John William McGrath admitted killing his parents Francis L McGrath 37 and Willena 40 and brothers Peter F 13 and Charles A 5. He was taken to Concord for a closed Juvenile Court hearing under police guard. The town of 5500 mourns as funerals are planned at the Good Shepherd Methodist Church. The youth had two years of psychiatric treatment and had been described as bright.
U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers received a warm Southwest Virginia homecoming after his release from a Russian prison. In Norton he praised hearing a Virginia accent, planned a few days with family, and reflected on public attention while locals greeted him with congratulations.

A Montgomery Ward & Co. manager L. M. Gillain his wife Blanche and son Donald aged 15 survived a terror filled night after being held by a trio of gunmen in Pontiac Michigan. A security guard slipped away to report the robbery from a nearby gas station prompting police to search a swampy field in Waterford Township where two gunmen were believed trapped. A third suspect fled to Gillain's home Sunday night. Police described the two trapped men as armed and dangerous.
