Ouachita parish cotton growers including sharecroppers and tenants will vote Saturday in a secret referendum on whether marketing quotas should apply to the 1938 cotton crop under the new agricultural conservation act. Polls open by 9 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Each producer votes once.
Vienna reports indicate Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg has resigned amid Nazi pressure to cancel or postpone the Austrian independence plebiscite. The government ordered mobilization and tightened security as clashes erupt between Nazis and Fatherland Front loyalists. Otto Ender, a moderate anti Nazi, is rumored as his successor.
Ouachita parish registrar of voters in the courthouse will stay open Saturday until 5 p.m. to allow West Monroe residents not yet registered to qualify for the April municipal election. All voters must register by Saturday 5 p.m. to vote next month under Louisiana law.
Eldon Parsley, jailed on kidnapping charges in Baton Rouge, recounts his bid for shared custody of his four year old son Malcolm. He says his wife won a Texas divorce granting custody and he ответы sought a temporary arrangement with his son. Parsley claims he took Malcolm for negotiation purposes and that the family traveled between Mansfield and Baton Rouge.

March 11 Vienna reports German forces crossing from Passau and Kufstein into Austria without resistance. Police collapse, crowds of Nazis flood streets while the Fatherland Front is toppled. Jews shelter as torchlight processions unfold and swastikas rise over the chancellery.
Hollywood reports Spencer Tracy and Luise Rainer captured the Academy's best acting honors for 1937 as 17 gold statuettes were awarded. Rainer won for The Good Earth, Tracy for Captains Courageous while The Life of Emile Zola took best picture and Joseph Schildkraut and Alice Brady earned supporting actor and actress awards.
In Sacramento the effort to grant Tom Mooney a legislative pardon failed 38 to 28 after a long night session. Mooney, jailed since 1916 for the Preparedness Day bombing, claimed he was framed as supporters promised reconsideration. Opponents warned the move would not prevail with the full membership.
Richard Whitney, former NYSE president, is indicted for first degree grand larceny in the misappropriation of about 105000 dollars from a trust fund, used for personal loans. He was booked and bailed as investigations into the firm’s collapse continued with other possible sources of charges.
President Roosevelt urged a united front for the 1938 Community Chest drive in the East Room, stressing that national stability comes only with jobs and good pay. He defended direct relief as aid for human misfortune while promising work relief to provide employment and reform a maladjusted society. He noted about one third of the unemployed are under 25 and will be assets to the nation.
Monroe police report a Thursday night break in at Sherrouse school. A front window was forced and a telephone plus two alarm clocks were stolen, according to Police Captain Pettit and Sergeant Meek. Caretaker Henry L. Gibbs reported the incident.
The Monroe and West Monroe Chamber of Commerce junior board heard reports from several committees about the 1938 program. Gilbert area farmer V Hill of Franklin parish grows radishes on twelve acres eight miles southeast of Gilbert Louisiana. He has earned $200 this year and expects $1,000 as the crop matures. He sold 20 crates at one dollar per crate to northern and eastern markets and anticipates at least 800 crates more from the same 12 acres.
