The Louisiana Board of Pardons began a three day session to review clemency petitions in 300 cases. Tomorrow the board will hear Dr James Monroe Smith former Southern University president seeking a pardon from an 4 to 24 year Angola sentence for embezzlement and related charges. The panel includes Lieutenant Governor Marc M Mouton Assistant Attorney General W D Goff and the trial judge.
Minna Marks aunt of former Mayor Arnold Bernstein and Bertha Kaliski died at her Winnfield home Sunday afternoon. The funeral was at Peters Funeral Chapel Monday with Rabbi F K Hirsch of Temple B Nayel officiating. Interment followed in a local Jewish cemetery. She is survived by niece Nettie Bernstein of Winnfield and nephew Rudolph Bernstein of Winnfield.
