A string of five incendiary blazes left thirty-one houses destroyed as firefighting units worked through the night. The department battled continuous outbreaks from shortly after eleven until early morning, with investigation to determine suspects and motive.
A string of five incendiary fires swept through Monroe on Tuesday night into Wednesday, destroying about thirty one houses and injuring no one. The losses total around 21000 with roughly half insured. The Otal blaze near Delta Street affected the Monroe Cotton Oil Company plant, thought to be caused by two white men fleeing the scene. A horse was killed by an electric wire during the chaos. Separate incidents included smaller blazes at nearby properties and a false alarm that hampered response as winds hampered containment. In Mobile a hydro airplane exhibition craft was knocked down by wind, but the pilot escaped injury. El Paso reports Villa captured four Mexican workers from Palomas Land and Cattle Co. near the Bosques ranch.
A man calling himself Jack Ellis and his wife, staying with Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Colvin at 301 Calypso Street, were arrested six miles downriver after stealing 181 dollars, a four hundred dollar bill, and a watch chain from Mr. Colvin. Police traced them to a skiff purchase paid with two gold pieces, found money hidden in the woman's hair, and Ellis confessed to taking the money. The couple, who used multiple names and carried skeleton keys, are to be sent to State authorities and jailed locally.
