Westbrook Pegler criticizes Truman Wallace and others in a sweeping attack on postwar liberalism. He argues the group recanted as communism and Moscow dominate world affairs, accusing Acheson Hiss Berle and the Moscow circle of betraying American interests and pushing toward a Soviet-leaning foreign policy.
In Baton Rouge on March 7 the Louisiana House heard a claim that the Long administration is being sabotaged in the highway department amid a stormy session. Rep. Sidney Sylvester accused department members of trying to push the highway system to failure before the next gubernatorial campaign. A motion to dismiss two highway engineers sparked further debate as the House approved a 5 million dollar special highway appropriation by a 93 to 1 vote.
A federal jury in New York found former government clerk Judith Coplon and Russian Valentin Gubitchev guilty of conspiracy and attempted espionage at 11 45 a.m. EST.
Charles Edward Bynum, 93, prominent Monroe businessman and real estate holder, died at Riverside Sanitarium at 6:30 a.m. He helped run Southern Grocer, steered Monroe Building and Loan Association through the 1930s, and served with banking interests. Funeral planned at First Baptist Church with interment at Old City Cemetery. Pallbearers named. Born January 2, 1857 in El Dorado, Arkansas, he claimed to have arrived in Monroe on the first steamboat after the Civil War.
Former President Herbert Hoover urged a vast and energetic reform of the government’s bookkeeping system. Testifying before the Senate executives expenditures committee, he supported a bill to overhaul accounting procedures and create a new office of comptroller general in the treasury. He cited inefficiency, waste, and lack of accountability as flaws, while noting agreement on reform presence but not method.
Police records show Carl Rudolph Koontz and Charles E. Morgan were arrested February 22 after being identified by a Sears employee. Koontz had prior forgery and larceny convictions and was jailed in multiple states. Morgan, using the alias Clarence Smythe, also faced numerous forgery and bad check sentences. They were moved to Oklahoma City for federal court trial and are sought for forgery in several cities.
In New Orleans a 23 month old infant, Joseph R. St. Romain Jr., died while being rushed by state police toward Charity Hospital from Port Allan. Officials said the death followed spinal meningitis of a non contagious type. Trooper Burch reported the mother whispered the sad news as the car sped to the hospital.
Manchester March 7 Alice Sander testified that she did not want to marry a doctor as the trial over Dr Hermann N Sander continued. Prosecutors contend Abbie Borreto died from air embolism after injections of air into her veins. Harvard pathologist testified that 200 to 300 cc of air would be required to kill, while defense says 25 to 28 cc were injected and she was dead before.
Late returns from 3,271 precincts show the conservative Populist Royalist Party led by Constantin Tsaldaris with 248,505 votes to the National Progressive Union's 239,547. The Leftist National Progressive Union gains despite the army's civil war victory, while Liberals and Republican front trails mix with 20 splinter parties.
Sofia March 7 former Bulgarian translator Michael Shipkov confessed before a people's court that he spied for the United States under the direct guidance of ex U S Minister Don ald R Heath The witness led other Bulgarians Rin dova Kratukov Tzan ov and Nalchev to admit similar confessions and the group pleaded guilty to police, with a dramatic affidavit earlier released by the U S state department detailing coercive interrogation.
George M. Mellinger, 53, vice president and Poydras street branch manager of Whitney National Bank, died after brief illness. A New Orleans native, he served 30 years with the bank and was active in civic affairs including the grand jury, Krewe of Hermes, opera board, and several clubs. Survivors: his widow and son Dr. George T. Mellinger, both of New Orleans.
R. B. Richardson reported Tuesday a contract for the Little Bayou Boeuf bridge in Ouachita parish has been awarded to Forcum James of Baton Rouge. The project will include 1467 mile of grading drainage structure gravel surfacing and a 160 foot reinforced concrete slab bridge on State route C 1467.
March 7 Pittsburg report notes big spurt toward normal coal production as full crews resume work in pits nationwide. United States Steel says most curtailed operations near capacity by week end. Retail coal regions report improving sales as long strike ends and thousands return to work. Nearly a third of 372,000 idle diggers resumed yesterday.
New Orleans on March 7 the department of wildlife and fisheries urged the public to eat frozen ducks and geese by March 27. Commissioner Ernest S. Clements cited federal law prohibiting possession of migratory fowl after the deadline and said violations are federal cases whether stored in a warehouse or home freezer.
One man was held for questioning as investigators probe the death of 65 year old Robert Bankston found unconscious before his home. He died in New Orleans after injuries endured three days earlier. Funeral services for Bankston were slated for the day.
Washington March 7. John L. Lewis won for coal miners may open wage boosts in other industries. The United Mine Workers offered a million-dollar loan to help the CIO Auto Workers win concessions from Chrysler and General Motors. Lewis breaks the dike blocking wage increases, delivering about 1.40 dollars per day in gains for miners, plus welfare funds. The auto workers are in an eighth week of a pension strike, seeking a 31-cent hourly package from GM, whose contract ends in May.

Public schools in Grand Prairie and Washington were closed as two spinal meningitis cases prompted precautionary action. Four year old Rita Gale Stears of Grand Prairie died at a New Orleans charity hospital. another Grand Prairie child was listed in critical condition. Schools were ordered closed by Superintendent S. A. Moneda to allow contact examinations.
Vice President Albert Barkley will address a dinner hosted by the National Conference of Christians and Jews in Houston. He is expected to depart shortly after the event.
Orleans Parish grand jury issued a seven page report detailing filthy deplorable conditions at the second precinct police station and the house of detention. They noted prisoners received two sandwiches and coffee daily with no bath or shave for seven days, and found filthy blankets littered floors with paper and beer cans. The jury questioned the usefulness of recommendations if ignored and cited conditions dating to previous inspections.

Westinghouse Electric Corporation said it is building an atomic power plant for a U.S. Navy submarine at the old Bettis airport near Pittsburgh. Work began last April with an estimated completion window of two to six years. the submarine itself will be built elsewhere.

The ministry of information announced the arrest of Rev. Andrija Majic, a Roman Catholic priest, on a charge of spreading national hatred in Belgrade Yugoslavia. The state said the arrest was made today and cites the charge linked to nationalist hostility.
