Linden E. Bentley 91, founder and former publisher of the Donaldsonville Chief and organizer of the Louisiana Press Association, died at his New Orleans home. A native of Lynchburg Ohio, he moved to Louisiana at age 12 and helped launch the St Landry Progress and the St James Sentinel, later serving with the Chief for decades.

A Senate agriculture subcommittee put contempt proceedings on hold after receiving a letter from Jonathan Daniels agreeing to answer questions about urging Harry Slattery to resign as rural electrification administrator. Daniels cited official confidential relations with the president and refused to discuss Slattery's claim he had pressed for resignation.
In New Orleans on March 6, Anthony Wilson a 29 year old Black man charged with attacking a white woman in 1942 awaited execution by electric chair between noon and 3 pm. His lawyers petitioned the Supreme Court for a stay while they pursue review. Governor Jones at Baton Rouge said action would depend on the high court ruling. Wilson spoke with deputies overnight and said he is ready to die despite maintaining innocence. The prior inmate Parker Lloyd Adams 27 was executed Saturday for a pharmacy manager hold up.
An authoritative report says Germany suffered about 24 000 casualties in three abortive efforts to wipe out the Allied beachhead below Rome. The losses tie up crack divisions expected to meet Eisenhower’s invasion, forcing shifts from Italy to other fronts.
An army B-26 from Barksdale field crashed near Caster Louisiana in flames after a lightning strike. Reported casualties include the plane’s entire crew of five or six. officials said the plane may have been from Barksdale or another base and a public relations officer would confirm details.
Naples March 6 Allied railway officials report 509 Italian civilians died when a freight train stalled in a southern Italy tunnel. civilians climbed aboard while halted on a four per cent grade as carbon monoxide swept the tunnel. Only a few escaped. crew except the fireman were killed.
