Van Odom announced retirement at end of his current four year term June 30. He will complete 32 years in education and leave after 17 years as superintendent. Board president Wesley Shafto Jr. said the plan came as a complete surprise and no successor has been chosen.
New York stocks rise aided by heavy turnover and favorable economic news. Automobile sales strong in February and recent steel and construction reports support gains. Nixon administration extending the 10 percent income surcharge beyond June 30 had little impact as motors chemicals and steels show firm to higher moves.
Space Center Houston AP report astronauts James McDivitt and Russell Schweickart successfully fired the lunar module descent engine during a six minute burn after transferring from the command ship. Schweickart overcame illness to complete the maneuver and a seven minute televised telecast showed both pilots in the LEM cabin.
President Nixon elevates Deputy Administrator Dr. Thomas O. Paine of Berkeley to head NASA. Paine, 47, has led the agency since James E. Webb's retirement, after a national search. Apollo 8 crew receive the Goddard Memorial Trophy. Lovell, Borman, and Anders are tied to ongoing moon missions.
Secretary of State Wade O Martin told the Legislative Budget Committee he will comply with governor ordered economy measures but will decide alone if an emergency allows bypassing freezes on employment. He disputed a division ruling on hiring student labor and said he will be the sole judge of emergencies.
Hal R. Henderson district attorney for Bienville Parish announced that the office will not accept waivers for traffic violations in Louisiana. Parishes were notified non-residents may file waivers, and all cited drivers must appear in court for arraignments as dated on their tickets, signaling a statewide crackdown.
