Associated Press reports that a federal grand jury will review charges against two congressmen and other possible misconduct by Washington officials. White House officials said evidence from the Chicago jury not brought there due to lack of jurisdiction would be examined here.
Washington March 5 A two fold soldier bonus plan proposes cash payments or paid up insurance for veterans. Rep Jeffers said cash payments could settle the bonus issue in a year and cost 1.3195 billion funded by a bond issue. Compensation for officers to captain and daily rates for home and overseas service are specified under this plan.
A Houston pedestrian B. H. Yarwood was struck near North Third and K street at 9 30 p m by a car driven by 17 year old Willie Mangham. Yarwood suffered a severe skull fracture and was taken to St Francis sanitarium in the Mangham car.
Senator Matthew M. Neely charged the Republican national administration with shrinking national wealth by 75 billion dollars. He cited government statistics and claimed that after Wilson left office the wealth stood at 300 billion, with 18 months of Republican rule causing a per person loss. He linked depressions in farm values to the overall decline.
Washington reports under the Winston bill about 16 million dollars restored to 5500 former enemy aliens by the alien property custodian. The act allows return of trusts seized during the war up to 10000 dollars value. A total of 12500 claims have been filed under this act.
Senator Heflin of Alabama said in the Senate that the principal referred to in a January telegram from Ira E. Bennett may be the president. The remark came during discussion of the Washington to Palm Beach message dated January 29.
The Morehouse parish grand jury convened in Bastrop to probe the alleged $32,000 shortage in former Sheriff Fred Carpenter s tax-collection accounts. Governor Parker replaced Carpenter with S August Leopold as ex officio tax collector as state auditors, led by W N McFarland, review bondsmen and coverages amid ongoing investigations.
Special government counsel in the oil annulment suits have not completed preparations to go into court. Officials expect to announce no action before tomorrow.
The tariff commission delivered its wheat inquiry report to President Coolidge on March 5. The president is expected to proclaim an increase in duties on wheat and wheat products soon.
President Coolidge told Manila mission that now is not the time for Philippine independence. In a letter to Manuel Roxas he said the US must continue protecting the islands and sustain Governor General Wood amid Philippine calls for self rule.
In Washington on March 5 the McKenzie bill to accept Henry Ford’s wartime Muscle Shoals offer faced a parliamentary delay. The House limited debate to ten hours then set Wednesdays for miscellaneous bills. Leader Longworth’s bid for unanimous consent to advance the bill was blocked, but he planned to renew the request to speed the Ford offer, pending in committee over two years.
Governor John M. Parker stated he would not consider becoming president of Louisiana State University as a successor to President Boyd. He expects the selection process to extend beyond his term, with the board of supervisors to meet in early April to discuss the matter.
The House set aside other business to continue considering Henry Ford's offer for Muscle Shoals. Republican leader Longworth urged no interruption in the debate started yesterday as about seven hours of general discussion remained before amendments to the McKenzie bill. He expressed confidence a vote would occur before week’s end.
