Mrs. Richard Harrison teaches her son Rex rifle handling for a family Turkey Shoot at Ouachita Parish Rifle Range near the Municipal Airport. Sponsored by Monroe La Sertoma Club with guns provided by the parish sheriff department the event runs Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon to 5 p.m.
Kenneth J. Rabben reports that Exploration Scholarships funded by US Office of Education and private sponsors invite students aged 15 to 21 to travel with scientists. Applications due March 16 with winners announced April 16. funds cover up to eight weeks, average 1500 dollars, with full and partial awards.

Year 40 Model Cities scholarships are expected this year. The program opens to all who can meet the requirements, not just top students. Expeditions include digs in Israel at Ubeidiya and Einger, Egyptian temples in December, Nevada's Monitor Valley, and Mayan site Becan in Yucatan, plus eclipse study in the Sahara and trips to Kenya and Md. St. Mary's City. Last year 44 scholarships awarded. BIA accounted for ten.
Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Estes 68 of 1209 North 3rd Street West Monroe will be at 2 p.m. at Kilpatrick's Funeral Home chapel Rev. Carl J. Austin officiating burial in Salem Cemetery Eros. She died Thursday at St Francis Hospital after an extended illness. Survivors include a daughter Shirley Cerniglia West Monroe a son Charles Estes Chatham two brothers William Henderson Jonesboro and Walter Henderson Eugene Ore four sisters Clydell Barnett Chatam Violet Trainer Alexandria Barbara Hilton Shreveport Annie Sharp Eros four grandchildren and four great grandchildren Pallbearers Roy Campbell James Jarrison Roger Holloway Hershal Sharp Mike Sharp Cleve Estes.
Nick T Slavent 50 of St. Louis Missouri and former Monroe resident died Wednesday. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Mulhearn Funeral Home chapel with Msgr George Martinez officiating. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery. Surviving are five sons two daughters a step daughter a brother and a sister.
Monroe relatives listed include Mary Slavent married to Monroe, one step-son Ureford Jordan of West Monroe, brothers George and Tommy Slavent, and sisters Carmelyn Tucker Catherine Jones Ossusky Ferracci from Amarillo Orlando Shaw.
