President Eisenhower asserted the Western world has maintained a great lead in hydrogen bombs and atomic weapons, saying it would be pointless to predict how long the advantage might last. He declined to speculate on Russia catching up within years.
North east State College invites bids for a large new classroom building. Plans and specs are available to contractors listed, with bids to be opened in Baton Rouge at 11 a m on March 17. Estimated cost is $600,000 and the site is a prominent campus location.
Crossett Arkansas March 2 Special The Crossett Volunteer fire department fought to save a six room frame home at 106 Cedar Street but it burned to the ground around 3 30 am. The house owned by J C Johnson was occupied by the J Lee Posey family. Firemen said the blaze started in the kitchen and spread beneath the main structure before arrival. Most furniture was removed and the home reported total loss.

Pvt. William A. Verdine of Starks Louisiana faces a general court martial on AWOL charges after being turned over by the Soviets in Berlin. He has been held by Russians for years and could face up to six months in prison dishonorable discharge and loss of pay if convicted. Verdine is held in the Frankfurt Army stockade and was reported missing since February 3 1949 from the 14th Armored Cavalry Division at Coburg West Germany near the border.
The Baptist Convention of Ouachita Caldwell and Morehouse parishes, with 79 churches, met to plan a Baptist encampment and a Baptist-owned hospital in the Twin Cities. Rev. A. T. Mitchell, president, announced goals, with meetings at Ridge Avenue and First Baptist Church in West Monroe. Rev. Paul Roberts delivered the evangelistic sermon. Las Vegas reports AEC scientists canceled a scheduled big shot before dawn after a last minute conference due to unacceptable weather conditions.
In M'Gehee Arkansas two planes believed to be Air Force jets crashed in southeast Arkansas this morning. A colonel from Greenville Air Force Base reported the crashes near McGehee. A truck driver saw three parachutes and Mayor L L Jones described a ball of fire on one plane. A helicopter later airlifted pilots from the scene and a second crash location was reported by Dumas officials.
Cloudy skies were forecast to clear late afternoon in the Twin City area. No rain was expected. Morning high reached 67 degrees at 11:28 a.m. and a low of 59 degrees was recorded around 5:30 a.m.
Leaders across Ouachita parish and officials from Monroe and West Monroe joined a morning ceremony to launch the Red Cross 1955 fund membership drive. The goal is 41 500 including advanced gifts and local solicitations.
The 93rd Bomb Wing at Castle AFB California will receive jet powered B52 Stratofortress bombers starting late spring. The B52s will replace the SAC fleet of B36s across 11 wings, with production at Boeing plants in Seattle and Wichita.

DURANT Mississippi O M Powell a 33 year old Rainbow Gardens night club operator died after being shot three times Friday in a scuffle with 58 year old E Young Gunter over a woman identified as Kathleen Burrell. Gunter bonded on a manslaughter charge and awaited grand jury action after earlier facing attempted murder charges. The shooting occurred as Powell tried to pull Miss Burrell from Gunters car outside a hosiery mill where she worked. Burrell is described as a niece of Gunters wife and living with the family.
Sightseers in Hawaii at a famed canefield volcano played a game they called coins in the fountain of lava. They pitched coins into the boiling lava and some coins became embedded in cooling lava. An elder commented that this was not a Hawaiian custom and warned that coins should be saved for buying drinks rather than thrown away.
United States faces only about three to four years of military superiority over Russia before balance shifts. Churchill warned Russia may gain H bomb delivery ability in three to four years, potentially leveraging ultimatums to seize border states. Officials in the United States say Russia lags in delivering a thermonuclear strike and will not match U S capability for years.
The Senate is expected to back the Finance Committee in rejecting a plan to reduce everyone's taxes by $20 next year. Sen Byrd of Virginia warns the main clash will occur in conference with the House, which already approved a $20 per person income tax cut to start January 1.
New York police booked William Patrick Farrell, 25, after 12 hours of questioning, on a homicide charge in the rape slaying of NYU graduate student Ann Yarrow. He had been arrested on a separate rape complaint and was later linked to the East Village crime.

In Irving Texas the 114 striking school employees remained in a meeting as the School Board ordered a return to work or replacement. Nine principals and other executives were fired after a day with citizen substitutes, while police watched for possible violence. The district faced a hands off stance from state education officials as absent staff ranged from one fourth to one third of the district’s roughly 300 employees.
Paris AP reports King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia abdicated in Phnom Penh in favor of his father Prince Norodom Suramarit. He cites opposition parties hampering reforms and says he will retire to live humbly like his subjects.
A Seoul bound train at Pusan railway station caught fire in a loaded passenger coach killing thirty nine Koreans. Firefighters from U S Army and Korea responded and contained the blaze in about 15 minutes. The fire destroyed one coach and damaged three others. No U S military personnel were aboard.
Thousands visit Natchez as the 23rd Natchez Pilgrimage opens. The three day tour visits 30 ante bellum homes with hostesses in period dress guiding tours. A Confederate pageant with a king and queen and court is staged each week.
