London reports a massive air assault by RAF bombers and US heavy bombers over Berlin. Captain Harold Balfour calls the raid the opening bars of a march to invade Europe as the war enters a decisive phase.
New York report states Great Britain, after negotiations with Bulgaria, will send 4 000 Jewish children and 30 adults to serve there and go to Palestine. Viscount Halifax called this a first step and said up to 29 000 Jewish children may be received by March 31, 1944, subject to arrangements. Church leaders and educators addressed the Madison Square Garden rally urging action.
A training plane piloted by a Netherlands student fliers group was reported missing after a crash near Pontchartrain. The aircraft departed from Jackson, New Orleans, and an army air base search was launched but stayed halted at dark yesterday.

Washington March 2 The Senate Military Affairs Committee postponed a showdown vote on a bill to halt farm worker induction. Selective Service officials and the War Department opposed the measure and will hear testimony from Colonel Lewis B. Sanders at 2 p.m. Chairmen Reynolds, a Democrat from North Carolina, leads the panel.
The Weather Bureau warned of strong winds up to 45 mph and a cold wave across Louisiana and Mississippi tonight. Anticipated temperatures drop to as low as 10 to 14 degrees in extreme north Mississippi and 20 to 26 in the south, with occasional rains, sleet and possible freezing rain. Gulf coast storm warnings were issued from Pensacola to Lake Charles.
Soviet forces under Marshal S. M. Timoshenko pushed into German positions on a broad northwestern front, retaking 302 villages and sweeping over 900 square miles. The offensives, described as eight days of heavy fighting, left 8000 Germans killed and 1000 captured in areas west of the Valdai hills including Demyansk and nearby towns.
Navy Secretary Knox questioned whether aerial bombings of German submarine bases on the northern French coast were doing direct damage to U boats. He estimated 300 to 400 submarines and said he could not assess direct hits, noting some stalls are heavily protected. He admitted bombings are effective in disrupting submarine operations.
The navy reported American Dauntless dive bombers and Grumman F4F escorts attacked the Japanese air base area at Munda New Georgia Island. The March 1 strike started fires and all U S planes returned. It was the eighth raid on Munda since November 23 as Guadalcanal air forces target the base.
Senator Overton of Louisiana opposed the confirmation of former Texas Governor James V. Allred to the fifth circuit court of appeals calling it political. Allred met with opposition leaders Ellender and Overton at a Judiciary Committee session before Attorney General Biddle testifies Friday.
Congressional backers pressed a 20 percent withholding on wages as part of a "Rumplan" to fund tax relief by applying collected sums toward current taxes. The Ways and Means Committee approved the measure, effective July 1, with key decisions on year-end withholdings pending.
A two man Japanese submarine captured in the war arrived at noon and was displayed on Walnut Street after a downtown parade in West Monroe and Monroe. The public could view the craft by buying war stamps or bonds with 25 cent stamps for children and $1 stamps for adults, continuing on the ninth page.

Allied airmen waited for clear skies as a 14ship Japanese convoy moved west from New Britain toward the New Guinea coast. The force, sighted off Talasea and about 250 air miles from Salamaua and Lae, faced an advancing weather front that kept airstrikes at bay.
Representative Larcade of Louisiana proposes delaying the first income tax payments from March 15 to June 15, 1943. He argues many laborers and businessmen have never paid taxes or filed returns and lack help to file by the original deadline.
Major General Harry C. Ingles, 55, of Pleasant Hill Nebraska, named deputy commander of U S army forces in the European theater. He will serve as assistant to Lieutenant General Frank M Andrews, while Major General Russell P Hartle remains in command of troops in the field. Ingles previously led mobile forces in Panama and is married with three children residing in San Antonio.
Allied forces report major success in northern Tunisia with 60 Axis troops killed and two German tanks destroyed in three days. Sbeitla, Feriana, and Kasserine captured without combat. air forces claim 25 Axis planes shot down. In Beja sector, Germans lose six tanks in a counterattack. Palermo strikes target Axis shipping and warehouses as Fortresses and Marauders press the campaign.
