Tokyo reports a massive explosion at Hirakata arsenal near Osaka wiping out a large section of the town. Officials say 22 bodies recovered, 151 missing, 550 injured, and 10,000 homeless as fires, shockwaves reach Osaka Kyoto and Kobe.
In Miami Florida a recall vote ousted Mayor Robert R Williams and two commissioners. Official results show Williams DuBose Ferguson decisively defeated with about four to one margins. E G Sewell named to succeed Williams for the remainder of the term.
J Richard Dixie Davis, whose testimony helped convict Tammany leader James J Hines, plans marriage within a week to Hope Dare show girl sweetheart. Davis, ex attorney for the Dutch Schultz gang, faces possible 27 year sentence but seeks leniency for testifying. Dare, a red haired dancer, was with Davis at a Philadelphia hideout when arrested for trial.
Senate labor committee members proposed Secretary Hopkins serve as business spokesman during Wagner Act amendments. He is said to be reviewing proposed changes at the request of Chairman Thomas. Labor department and labor relations board are also examining the idea as hearings are delayed pending peace conference outcomes.
Jefferson Lake Oil Company filed for a court order directing Louisiana to show why it should not pay the oil firm 897,465.72 dollars. The suit relates to a past settlement with the Jefferson Island Salt Mine Company over minerals taken from Lake Peigneur. The oil firm claims a state lease on the bed and seeks share of the 1.5 million already paid to the state. Judge Holcombe set March 13 for auditors to appear and explain why payment should not be made.
A Halifax blaze at the Queen hotel and adjacent buildings left about 117 people in the structure with 21 missing and many feared dead. Newark March 2 240 workers fired after two day sit down strike at J E Mergott company under a Supreme Court ruling allowing mass dismissals. Company spokesman Emanuel P Scheck said the layoffs were first under the ruling as C I O attorney Samuel L Rothbard vowed to press the strike. The plant employs about 600, and the union contract expired February 1 with renewal held until a union vote.
A P Tugwell state treasurer and former Louisiana highway commission leader visited Monroe on Thursday. He spoke on his business interests and made a press statement about the state's political situation.

Federal agents halted an extortion plot against Benjamin F. Lee a prominent Cuyler farmer by Robert George Case 17 of Cuyler The youth admitted writing a letter threatening Lee and his daughter Barbara 19 Warnes said Case was arrested after a pursuit through a wood during a pay off trap near a bridge in Cuyler He was held in Cortland jail as prosecutors review evidence with the U S attorney in the northern district.
The Rev. Martin Niemoeller, Lutheran pastor and World War submarine commander, begins a second year in a concentration camp in Berlin on March 2. His health is reported good by parishioners, with no release in sight despite appeals. Authorities and Goebbels criticize supporters of the Confessional Synod.

A Philadelphia grand jury, after 17 months, charges Mayor S Davis Wilson and the police department with allowing and aiding commercialized vice to flourish citywide. The presentment says political control enabled organized vice, with 343 people indicted on various charges.
