A Sunday night blaze in Shreveport fatally burned four children. Fire crews found all victims at the scene and are investigating the cause. Authorities have not released the children's names.
An early morning fire on Virginia Avenue in western Shreveport killed or seriously burned four children and one 18-year-old man. Ernest Bates carried three children through flames before perishing. the blaze destroyed several cottages and left families in shock as investigators probe the stove explosion origin.
Clarence Deweine and an unnamed accomplice known as Joe or Shorty are slated for grand jury action today in connection with the murder of L. S. Thompson last November. Thompson, an aged commission merchant, was killed for a small sum. one robber held him while the other struck the skull with a coupling pin. Dewein, not yet 21, allegedly confessed. his co-conspirator fled to Jonesboro but was later found. Relatives have hired Charles P. Johnson to defend Dewein.
Cadillac becomes the first Michigan city and among early mid sized U.S. places to adopt a city manager system. The manager reports to the mayor and four unpaid commissioners who can recall them. The manager can hire or fire most municipal officers and workers, excluding the city clerk treasurer and assessor.
Austin March 2 seventy eight years after Texas patriots met at Washington on the Brazos to declare independence from Mexico and form a provisional government. Cities across Texas observe the holiday with courts banks and offices closed and business partially suspended.
Jas per Webb, Oak Grove farmer, previously convicted and sentenced to death for killing Archie Whitwell near Oak Grove in 1911, is arraigned for a new trial after the State Supreme Court remanded the case. Webb was released on bail in January after nearly two years in jail awaiting execution.

Assistant Supervisors report audits Richland Parish Sheriff and tax collector Wm M Oliver find unaccounted receipts totaling 253.75 across taxes licenses and fines with about 26 payments not recorded in cash books or settlements. Irregularities include movable property taxes recorded late and misused deduction lists, improper mileage charges, and peddler license violations with parish and state licenses issued separately.
A directive states the American commission may view Bo ppy only after consultation with General Carranza. The note emphasizes formal authorization and the need to coordinate with Mexican military leadership.

Juarez March 1 The Benton investigation commission was blocked from going to Chihuahua to inspect the slain Briton’s body by Rebel orders. Col. Fidel Avila, military commander here, refused to let them board the waiting passenger train.
The Benton investigation commission to Chihuahua was halted near Juarez as they were prepared to depart. A State Department explanation is awaited. Members include Charles A. C. Perceval, James Hambledon, R. E B. Thomas, Dr. B. M. Worsham, and Majors W. T. Davidson and C. J. Manly.
Mrs Elsie Goelet formerly Mrs Whelen of Philadelphia seeks a divorce from Robert Goelet in Rhode Island Superior Court. Public airing of evidence unlikely. settlement may grant Mrs Goelet alimony and custody for sons Ogden and Peter. Also notes anticipated injunction request by Pleasant against Treasury on Cuban sugar preference and a Reading Railway trust dissolution case in New Jersey with government expected to finish its case soon.
An urgent appeal from border citizens near Brownsville asks Gov Colquit to deploy additional ranger forces to protect residents from Mexican bandits. Reported cross-border raids include stock theft and other depredations, with attackers returning to Mexico.
The blizzard hit the East and as far west as Cleveland with renewed snow. New York railroads faced disruption as no train left after 7 PM and Western Union limited wires. City streets remained partly uncleared. estimated earlier costs neared one million dollars. Five people were killed in New York City due to the storm.
The Federal League offered Christy Mathewson $65,000 to manage a team for three years. He declined the proposal and instead signed with the Giants today.
Jackson March 2 The Mississippi Supreme Court today affirmed the conviction of Col. Smith former chairman of the Penitentiary Board Smith was convicted for irregularities in the sale of an automobile to the State and was sentenced to five years in the penitentiary.
The Little couple Hervey S. and Anna Bond Little were acquitted of murdering J. J. Van Cleve. Public outcry followed, with plans for a mass protest at City Hall to demand resignations and condemn the verdict as a blow to law and order in Shreveport. Henry E. Hardiner of Alexandria visited Monroe on Sunday.
