A Senate bill to release 40 million bushels of government wheat to the Red Cross for relief was approved by the House agricultural committee 15 to 6, reversing a prior 14 to 9 setback. The measure allows some wheat use for livestock in crop failure areas mainly in the Dakotas Nebraska Montana Iowa Wyoming Colorado and New Mexico with a 40 million bushel cap and periodic requisitions.
Senate debate advances a bond based plan to accelerate World War I veterans adjusted service certificates payment. A New York report from March 1 lists southern state employment returns by city. Alabama shows Birmingham 2,005 and several smaller towns. Arkansas Little Rock 215 and Stuttgart 166. Kentucky Ashland 135 and other towns. Louisiana New Orleans 54. Mississippi 1,365 with Booneville 17. Tennessee Rockwood 75 and Nashville 13 plus Shawnee Falls 12 and Gallatin 4.
Senator K D McKellar of Tennessee seeks 25000 in damages for injuries from an October 1939 automobile collision in Oklahoma City. He sued Knox Garvin, Albert Glasby and Miss Lulu Glasby, naming Garvin as the driver.

Washington March 1 A House vote on a state and local liquor control plan was assured when 145 signatures on a petition moved the measure from the judiciary committee. Texas Democrat Mansfield became the 145th signatory rolling to the well in a wheelchair to sign. The move sets the stage for a test of House support for a constitutional amendment and a vote could come as early as March 14. The effort is led by wet blocs under Linthicum Maryland and Beck Pennsylvania amid Senate probe promises by Tydings Maryland.
The Ouachita Valley Fruit Growers' Association sponsors a cantaloupe movement. Marcel J. Voorhies of LSU compiled figures showing 1930 shipments. California led with 12,937 cars, Arizona 5,436, Colorado 2,754, and Louisiana only three cars. Total US shipments were 23,827 cars.
Former Arkansas governor Charles H. Brough, a special lecturer at the University of Arkansas, denounced a trustees’ ban on faculty political activity as aimed at him alone.
