The Supreme Court says private sector workers cannot be barred from employment on security grounds without a formal process. Government payrolls face no change, as the court maintains no inherent right to federal employment while protecting cross examination for private industry cases.
Washington AP reports a record number of Soviet diplomats have defected to the West in the past week. Officials say many are mid level and will be granted asylum and debriefed for intelligence. A 27 year old Kaznacheev defected from Burma and was flown out by American authorities. Reasons cited include disillusionment with the secret police and appeal of better living conditions abroad.
Hot weather under partly cloudy skies dominates the forecast for northeast Louisiana this afternoon and tomorrow. A few isolated thundershowers may occur. Yesterday’s high reached 95 degrees at Selman Field. Tonight’s low 72 to 76, with tomorrow’s highs 92 to 96.
A pilotless U S Air Force jet struck a schoolhouse in Na ha Okinawa today, killing two Okinawan residents and scattering fiery fragments over nearby homes. The incident damaged the building and caused a residential blaze.
A control center reported 21 killed and 100 injured in Okinawa as a jet crash and explosion near Miamori Elementary School set homes ablaze and injured many children. Separately Washington ends fiscal 1959 with a peacetime deficit projected around 12.9 billion dollars, with 1960 outlook uncertain yet potentially brighter.

Monroe patrolman Virgil Parker delivered his newborn son at 4 a.m. after his wife went into labor at home. AP reported Earl Mazo, author of a Nixon book, says Chief Justice Earl Warren called him a damned liar during a cocktail party exchange. Warren reportedly argued the book promotes Nixon, while Mazo says the dispute stemmed from misunderstanding and the two later spoke cordially. Warren offered no comment.
Washington AP reports Lewis L. Strauss formally resigns from the unconfirmed post of secretary of commerce. The resignation is effective at close of business today and follows a White House letter exchange with President Eisenhower who praises Strauss and notes Senate criticism was unjustified.
John Henry Warran, 32 year old coal miner and father of three from Array Kentucky, goes on trial for murder in the death of independent mine operator Woodrow Smith 42 during an early violence incident in the United Mine Workers strike in eastern Kentucky. A seven man five woman jury was chosen, and a defense motion for separate trials was granted by Circuit Judge Sampson B Knuckles.
Gov Earl Long says he will fire about 40 state officials and will dismiss his cousin Dr Roy Wright of Public Welfare. Sen Ralph King reports Long told Public Welfare chief Mary Parker to fire Wright during a telephone talk. King cites plans to remove LSU board chair Theo Cangelosi and notes Long appears fatigued but mentally sound.
In Hahnvile Louisiana a 12 man jury acquitted New Orleans brothers Jay Brister 46 and William Brister 40 of a murder charge tied to the slaying of Kenneth Peters a 1 year old construction worker during a union dispute at a Paradis motel January 21 The trial followed an all day argument over union dues payments on a pipeline project The district attorney sought the death penalty while defense argued Peters acted in self defense
Chancellor Konrad Adenauer flew into West Berlin defying Communist threats to attend a meeting of the West German Electoral College. The assembly on Wednesday will select a successor to President Theodor Heuss following his death.
East Berlin accuses West Germany of seeking a separate peace to permit Soviet control over traffic into West Berlin. Electoral College delegates move toward Berlin amid German and Allied tension.
City Hall reports high demand for Fourth of July park reservations at Bernstein Park. H W McSherry notes six screen houses are booked while eight pits remain open, two in the Negro section. Contact McSherry at City Hall for pit reservations. Police Chief James C Kelly Jr calls for safe driving during the holiday. Monroe has no fatalities this year. City employees get a half day Friday, while police and fire maintain full weekend shifts. Ouachita Parish workers have Friday off by vote of the Police Jury.
Louisiana Governor Earl Long faces a counter divorce filing by his wife demanding 2500 monthly temporary alimony. The 63 year old governor released from a state hospital last week had sought separation over defamation and abandonment claims.
Israel faces likely collapse of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion's cabinet as a dispute over selling 250000 grenade throwers to West Germany unsettles coalition. Mapai ministers demand resignations from key socialist and leftist members unless they support the deal. Ben-Gurion prepared to resign as Parliament delays decisive vote.
