The notice stresses that strong effort now determines votes and final standings in the subscription contest. It warns of vote drops after this week and encourages diligent campaigning, especially by worthy ladies, promising clubs of eight dollars yield 112000 extra votes plus district prize distribution.
Winnfield July 29 Sety Jefferson a self confessed slaver of Sean Chandler and his wife was tried and convicted in two hours and sentenced to hang in one hour and fifteen minutes the trial was peaceful though crowds gathered and militia guarded the station. Jefferson and accomplice Arthur Thomas testified to the crime and were escorted by troops to Baton Rouge after the verdict.
The Ruston Leader reports Captain H. A. Knowles of Company RF in the Louisiana State National Guard was ordered by Adjutant-General McNeese to hold in readiness to move to Winnfield to protect Seth Jefferson and Arthur Jones, two Black men, as ordered.
