Japan's shipbuilding industry falters amid a global maritime recession and turns to land machinery to diversify. Officials say the shift aims to stabilize output and preserve jobs as demand shifts to inland equipment.

Students from Twin Cities were cited for yearbook awards at the Southeastern University Henington Publishing Co. Workshop in Hammond. Recipients include Ginger Ray West Monroe Stephanie Dorroh River Oaks Kyle BryanOgden High Tom Thurman Ouachita Parish Wayne Petrus West Monroe. Also noting July 4th birthdays for Lisa Herlevic Oliver North Apartments and Harvey Holdiness Monroe Utilities Commission.
Monroe Mayor W L Howard announces a city wide cost cutting program including a questionnaire for employees to map jobs and costs and a 24 hour deadline to surrender all credit cards. Vehicles must be left at department HQ and home use requires written multi official approval. Public Information Officer Sherry Walker is eliminated as part of the personnel cuts.
United Press International notes a Martian sol lasts 24 hours 37 minutes 23 seconds, making it 41 minutes 29 seconds longer than a 24 hour Earth day.
Bicentennial bound volumes of News-Star-World will be sold starting today July 2 and daily while supply lasts. The 88 page edition covers local area and national history as a keepsake of 1976. An unbound edition will accompany the regular paper for subscribers on Friday. Coupons in the advertisement allow reservations before Friday.
Monroe celebrates a Bicentennial weekend with a Jaycees Elks and Bicentennial Commission sponsored program. Activities begin 8 30 a m with continental breakfast and state officials then a parade to Forsythe Park for flag raising by Lt Gov Jimmy Fitzmorris at 11 a m. The Jaycees host events at Forsythe Park at 11 30 a m including games booths races and car show with a barbecue menu and ice cream. A second flag raising at noon opens Spirit of 76 motorcross with finals at 12 30 p m Sunday. Willis C McDonald arrives 1 51 p m Saturday for Civic Center ball at 9 p m with trophies at 4 p m.
Viola Scott, 36, of Madison Parish, died when lightning struck her in a field near Inglewood Bridge about 2 30 p m Monday. The incident occurred two miles south of Tallulah and is ruled the probable cause of death.
The Commerce Department said the index of leading indicators rose 1.4 percent in May, the fastest monthly gain in 10 months, placing it 13 percent above a year earlier and signaling continued growth and job creation. The May rise was led by a 5.2 percent jump in new orders and supported by longer work weeks, higher consumer cash, rising wholesale prices, and more building permits.
A New York based study by Standard Rate and Data Service finds Ouachita Parish and other areas with higher consumer spending. Local per household food outlay averages 2680 dollars while national and state comparisons show higher buying in cars, furniture, clothing, and general merchandise as factories boost production and job opportunities.
Candy Sue Crocker, a Texas resident from Alvaredo who attended Southeastern Louisiana University, was crowned Miss Louisiana. Pageant director David Turrentine explained residency rules allow her to compete, since she is considered a Louisiana resident for pageant eligibility. Crocker plans to move to Louisiana. she earned her Louisiana teaching certificate after graduation.
Monroe Mayor W L Howard announced his first appointments naming W E Whetstone of Collinston to oversee the Utilities Commission and coordinate Citizens Committees. Whetstone aims to align committees with the city council and departments, and to study energy and fuel availability at low cost. Charles Brown will head the first citizens committee with members including Max Riley and others to begin work immediately.
