Injuries Fatal To 21-Year-Old Gary Burkgart
A 21-year-old West Monroe man, Gary Mac Burkgart, died after a one car crash on Arkansas Road Tuesday night. Two other youths, Robert De Rosia and Melvin Bell, both 18, were hospitalized. The crash occurred about seven miles from West Monroe on La Highway 15. Burkgart was found pinned under the overturned vehicle. Funeral services will be held Thursday at Mulhearn Funeral Home West Monroe chapel with burial in Twin Cities Memorial Gardens. He is survived by his mother and grandmother and several aunts and uncles.

Tragic Zoo Trample: Girl Killed by Elephants at Madison Park
Ruth Ellen Freedman, three, died after slipping near the Henry Vilas Park Zoo elephant cage. Winkie the Indian import grabbed the girl with its trunk and dragged her inside the bars. Prof Ralph Freedman of Princeton University, Ruth Ellen’s father, and his wife tried to help but the elephant pulled her through. Coroner Clyde Chamberlain suspects fatal injuries from trampling near the cage. Ruth Ellen had been visiting Madison with her parents for the summer.
