No Decision Reached On Poison Label

Health secretary Abraham Ribicoff told congressmen from Louisiana and six southern states he has not decided on labeling gum turpentine as poison. A July 13 14 hearing will hear from turpentine interests and lawmakers, with a possible cancellation of the FDA order if no evidence of toxicity is shown.

Marcello Pleads Innocent In Illegal Reentry Case

Carlos Marcello of the New Orleans area pleaded innocent at arraignment on charges of illegally reentering the United States after deportation to Guatemala. Judge Herbert Christenberry gave 15 days for technical pleadings. Marcello, 51, kept free under a 10,000 dollar bond. Immigation officials had deported him April 4 after Guatemala rejected his birth certificate. he returned and surrendered in Metairie.

Shreveport To Get New Plants

Universal Oil Products Co announces a six million dollar investment in Illinois and Louisiana plants. About 1.8 million funds expansion at Des Plaines and McCook facilities, 4.2 million for new Shreveport plant. Subsidiaries Universal Oxidation Processes and Trubek Laboratories spend about 500 thousand on new facilities and testing labs.

Winn Librarian Retires June 30 with Successor Named

Winn Parish Library board accepted the resignation of Mrs. Ruby Hanks as librarian and named Evelyn Billings acting parish librarian. The retirement takes effect June 30 as Hanks moves to become director of the Madison-Tensas parish library. H. A. Keiffer was elected president for the coming year with Q. A. Burton as vice president and Dick Watts as acting secretary.

Fisherman survives single bullet after weapon drops

John Kastner, 35, was wounded four times by one bullet after dropping a .44 caliber pistol that discharged when it struck a rock. The bullet hit his calf, grazed his thigh, nicked his wrist, and struck his upper arm. He was hospitalized in satisfactory condition in Laramie, Wyoming.

West Monroe officers elected to Civil Service Board

Capt. Ray Wyles of the West Monroe Police Department and Capt. Wilbur Horn of the West Monroe Fire Department won popular vote to represent their groups on the Civil Service Board. Ballots were cast by fellow officers as West Monroe surpassed a population of 13 500 enabling civil service eligibility. Two more appointees will join from four named by Northeast College president, with a fifth chosen by the city committee from the municipality at large.
