Mellorine Bill Withdrawn From Louisiana House
In Baton Rouge a bill to outlaw mellorine, a dessert made with cottonseed oil instead of cream, was pulled from consideration after an 11-5 agricultural committee report opposition. The measure follows a 1954 defeat and ongoing court battles over health board approval and production feasibility. Mellorine advocates cite lower costs and potential cottonseed use, while opponents argue constitutional and monopolistic concerns.
