Senate kills House bill raising firemen wages in Louisiana
The Senate Industrial Relations committee defeated a House measure setting a 280 dollar monthly minimum for firemen in a dozen Louisiana cities amid mayoral opposition led by New Orleans' deLesseps Morrison. The 4 to 2 vote cited morale and budget concerns, with New Orleans facing a potential 579 thousand dollar cost versus cigaret tax gains. Governor Kennon had vetoed a similar 1952 bill.
