June brides dominate the social calendar with wartime simplicity. A notable prenuptial gathering honored Miss Sidney Marie Loeb and Dr. David Ostrich at Dr. Bert Heinberg’s home with lavish florals, corsages, and a champagne toast. Other notes include weddings, illness, and community youth activities.

The Civil Service Commission issued a new announcement for custodial officers junior grade and modified requirements for junior public health nurse. It extended applications for radio monitoring officer and bindery operative positions. salaries ranged from 66 cents an hour to 3200 a year. The notice notes age and physical requirements, testing, and filing deadlines including August 11 1942.

The first heavy supply of tomatoes is highlighted as a Victory Food Special. E N Thompson of the Ouachita County Food Industry committee says the tomatoes come from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia and South Carolina farms and are part of a national effort to prevent waste during wartime. Local merchants and the Agricultural Marketing Administration back the drive urging homemakers to buy and eat more tomatoes to support America.
Mrs. Fred Cassi hosted a Euchre club gathering at the community house lounge where dahlias galore and glass galox adorned the rooms. Prizes went to Mrs. Albert Bundurant first, Mrs. Samuel Yurtee second, and Mrs. Horace Rose of St Louis won the ghost prize.
A series of church and civic events in St Joseph include Baptist parish meetings in June marking the fifth anniversary of the local St Joseph Baptist church with Dr. Edgar Godbold addressing plans for a Baptist association. Presbyterians held an auxiliary forum at the community house and Rotary discussed USO drives. Guests from Baton Rouge and Chicago joined gatherings at homes and the community house.
An afternoon reception served fruit punch and delicate sandwiches to about 100 guests. Decor featured pink and white colors with crystal bow clusters and hydrangeas, plus silver candleabras. Messages note a Bible school event at Union church and community visits from various locals.
