Three Pacesetter Awards Presented by Monroe Council
The Monroe City Council gave three Pacesetter Awards to Mrs. Willard Wiley, Charles J. Edwards, and Chief James Kelly for their roles in the Cleanest City Contest anti litter drive. Mrs. Wiley resides at 29 Paige Drive and Edwards at 2701 Renwick Street.

Troy Happy At Tax Reduction On City Rolls
Monroe City officials report a $500000 plus surplus as tax savings. Mayor-elect Troy says a millage reduction seems feasible and would pass savings to taxpayers if practical. He notes no current financial crisis but will study the plan after returning from Baton Rouge.

Resolution Urges Black History Course at NLU
The Human Relations Council of Ouachita urges Northeast Louisiana University to establish a Black History course for the 1972-73 fall semester. The resolution, passed June 22, notes similar programs at Grambling, Southern, LSU and Tulane.

Monroe honors seven individuals and a civic club
At a May 30 banquet in Monroe Civic Center seven individuals and a civic club were recognized while Mrs. Wiley and Edwards could not attend. Mrs. Wiley faced a family tragedy before her honor and Edwards, an elementary supervisor, was detained. Monroe Mayor Jack Howard presented Chief Kelly a Pacesetter Award before announcing the chief's retirement. the mayor praised his unique impact as residents gave him a standing ovation at city hall chambers.
