Baton Rouge report says the senate approved the administration severance tax bill after a lengthy debate. The measure, supported by Allen of Winn Parish and Long, passed 25 to 14 and would raise the levy on all natural resources.
The roll shows 25 senators voting yes including Allen Barousse Boone Cain Delahoussaye Sere Ducers Fernandez Iisher Gamble Gilbert P H Hughes King Knott Labbe Larcade Norwood Oser Peterman Robinson Schwing Settoon Wingate Woods. Fourteen voted no including Brenner Brooks Caffery Duke Foucher T B Gilbert Jr Hall Holcombe Huson McConnell Red mond Skelly Whittington Williamson.
The measure would tax oil production on a quantity basis to fund free text books and replace funds from a tobacco tax repeal. Representative J E McClanahan of Caldwell introduced it, it passed the house and goes to the senate for concurrence before final approval. Senator O K Allen of Winn defended the bill, saying it aids small producers and is fair to other interests. Opponents, including Senators Whittington Cafey Huson Hal, termed the bill unfair and unethical.
Lisbon June 28 Captain Frank T Courtney who failed to reach the Azores yesterday started again at 8 83 a m for Horta 1050 miles away He plans to fly from there to the United States via Halifax after the hop.

Baton Rouge dispatch reports H A Boze assails Senator Norris Williamson of East Carroll parish as a moral coward and physical coward in a floor statement. Boze says Williamson claimed he is on the state payroll and a governor’s bodyguard, which he denies, noting six policemen accompanied Williamson during the exchange.
A nearly thousand strong excursion party returning from Scarborough collided with a shunting engine at Carlington Durham. Twenty two people mostly women and children died and forty seven were injured with twenty eight still in hospital. Rescue teams worked through the night beneath flares as wreckage was searched.
Fire department officials estimate 60000 in damages from a blaze that started early today in a Canal street building housing six concerns. The heaviest loss was the building owned by the Marshal Lapeyre estate, valued at 25000. Origin of the fire has not been definitely determined.

Albany, June 28. Governor Smith stayed up late listening to radio coverage as his name was placed in nomination for the presidency. He danced with family friends to The Sidewalks of New York after Roosevelt's speech and said he would not comment on politics until after balloting.
J C Dollar salesman for D Masur Sons was slightly hurt at 10 45 am today when a passing car driven by T O Bunn 804 St John street struck his arm as he stepped into the road on DeLiard street. Witnesses say Bunn swerved to avoid an east bound auto, but the door handle tore from the car and cut Dollar’s arm though the injury is not serious.
Francis M. Stephenson reports from Houston on June 28 that threats of a party bolt if Al Smith is nominated were cheered at a large meeting of dry delegates to the Democratic convention in Beaumont.
Convention managers hope to finish nominating speeches and adopt the platform in the afternoon session that began at 3 p m and then nominate the presidential nominee in the evening session. Final adjournment could be possible Friday.
A mass meeting near the Democratic convention demanded a bone dry plank and reaffirmed support for the 18th Amendment and Volstead Act. Delegates pledged to back strict enforcement while warning that a wet platform by Smith could cost Georgia the state by about 60 000 votes.
Alfred Fronval France's leading stunt pilot died when his plane crashed at the Villa Coublay field during a Vincennes fair display. After a display of loops tail spins and acrobatics he collided with a military craft on landing and his aircraft burned. Fronval had held the world's loop the loop record with 1 100 consecutive turns earlier this year.
In Alexandria Louisiana Monroe Waites and Victor Moreau drowned when their motor boat capsized in Bayou Rapides during a demonstration for the American Legion Fourth of July races. Two children aboard were rescued. efforts to revive the men failed.
