A mob of about 200 tried to seize Rainey Williams after he confessed to eight assaults on white women in the last month. Police warded off the crowd at Port Arthur city hall as Williams was loaded into Fire Chief Enright's speedster for transport to Beaumont. Officer Dewey Smith fired two tear gas bombs to disperse the mob after it opened the rumble seat. Two cars carrying mob members followed.

Mrs. A. D. Payne, wife of a prominent Amarillo attorney, was killed when their automobile exploded in what police call an infernal machine. Her 14-year-old son was critically injured as the car chassis remained and the gas tank stayed intact. Investigators found wiring and dry cell fragments indicating a powerful explosive. Shreveport youths jailed for light globe shootings

Local Woman Critically Hurt In Car Accident
