Whaling Criticized Over Oil Quotas and Whale Numbers
Friends of Farth argues quotas based on whale oil rather than species have driven declines. Whalers killed off blue whales and finbacks, now targeting smaller species in rising numbers. The 1970 season saw twice as many whales killed as 1933 for less than half the oil. A 10-year moratorium is urged to assure future whale supplies. Endorsed by J Cousteau and others.
