Viola Hunt an 18 year old orphan confessed she staged a tale of torture by three young men to persuade her grandparents to allow schooling. She admitted slashing herself tying feet and wrapping a handkerchief about her neck to seem injured while the motive was to gain permission to attend school.
Baton Rouge reports a two hour Senate debate on Dores bill to bar clearing house refusals of outside checks and to place supervision under the state bank examiner. The measure was sent back to the calendar for amendments after opposition claiming it would create a banking czar.
In Little Rock Arkansas on June 25 Peter Price 28 chased his girlfriend through a negro church during a service. He attacked her with an axe striking her in the head while church members intervened.
A federal hearing was conducted to decide if W. N. Clark owner of Clark's Pharmacy at 1503 De Siard Street should lose his operating license. The case concerns sale of Jamaica ginger before the Jamaican paralysis outbreak in Monroe. Federal Attorney C. M. Collier led the government's case before hearing officer W. P. Beasley of New Orleans.
In Louisiana near Kinder, Mrs J T O Ledoux and her daughter Mrs Ovice Landry of Eunice drowned while attempting to save Ledoux's two young sons from the Whiskey Chitto river. Their husbands rescued the children after warnings not to dive in.
The legislature records show H. B. 706 to fix Catahoula parish assessor expenses passed 74 5. H. B. 304 amending mutual life insurance laws passed 80 8. H. B. 26 providing for statewide tick eradiation under the Livestock Sanitary board passed 74 20. H. B. 750 calling a Louisiana constitutional convention in January passed 56 42. H. B. 850 extending electric and water plant franchises two years from expiration failed 42 36.
Senate bills consider S. B. 108 by Whittington to raise the Bosier and Webster parish assessors' salaries and S. B. 235 by Fisher to authorize parishes to grant garbage collection franchises with party line splits noted.
New Orleans report says firemen saved Mrs. Couch, 52, from a Southport home. She regained consciousness three hours later and was believed to recover. Firemen think she was overcome by smoke in her room and lapsed into unconsciousness.
Miss Mary Powell, fiancee of Captain Charles E. Kingsford-Smith, said she spent the day near the telephone after the Southern Cross reached Newfoundland. She noted their wedding is set for September and that he has promised no more long distance flights.
H D Apgar announces new traffic rules at Grand and De Siard streets to start 6 am Sunday. East and west De Siard traffic may go straight or right turn, no left. north and south Grand traffic may turn right or left, no straight through. The change aims to ease delays from heavy volume, with old rules to be restored if ineffective.
A blast in a Universal airlines hangar sparked a fire at Chicago municipal field destroying 50 airplanes and three hangars. The Universal lines suffered the heaviest loss with ten tri motor Fokker planes valued at 55 000 each as crews raced to control the blaze and save remaining aircraft.
Baton Rouge June 25 Senator Alvin O King of Calcasieu president pro tempore says he voted against Labbes resolution for a state referendum on prohibition and opposes the Wingrave bill to repeal the state law He states he supports prohibition and will vote against measures weakening 18th amendment enforcement He also opposed a Schwing memorializing Congress to repeal the 18th amendment.
Newark police seized John D. Galvoa for questioning in a probe tied to two recent New York slayings. A maniac who has written letters threatens to kill 13 more, prompting the investigation.
Weather watchers report continued extreme heat across the region from the grain belt to Texas and Oklahoma with temperatures above 90 and peaks near 103. In Arkansas and the Southeast, residents endure days of blistering heat as forecasts predict little relief and sporadic storms offer only slight respite.
Rep. Oscar De Priest of Illinois announced he would press ahead with a July 17 address to a black organization in Birmingham, Alabama, despite a telegram from the Ku Klux Klan declaring his presence undesired in the white state. De Priest, a Florence, Alabama native, did not alter plans.

The Louisiana house approved the Peltier Ginsberg tick eradication program 74 to 20 after debate with opponents. An appropriation of 400000 dollars annually from the general fund was reported for the tick program, awaiting action by both houses, as Governor Long considers the measure.

The Louisiana House approved a convention bill amid stormy sessions as critics argued the plan unsettles business and aims to back a Governor Long bond issue of 68 million dollars. Supporters said the convention would address bond authorization, flood control and pardons while opponents cited past impeachment and possible misappropriation. If Senate passes, the measure would go to voters in September primaries for ratification.
Charlie Netherly confessed to Deputy G. E. Erskine and District Attorney Vinson Mouser that he fired once at Vernon Pace during a dance at Netherly’s home. Hershel and Alfred Fulford assisted, with the weapon hidden later in LaFourche swamp. Alfred owned the gun. The trio faced charges of complicity.
