The Supreme Court upholds the federal ban on sending obscene material through the mail. The decision, 6 to 3, states obscenity is not protected by the First Amendment. It also upholds a 1870 California statute banning write, advertise, or distribute indecent literature.
The Senate judiciary committee approved unanimously the nomination of John Minor Wisdom of New Orleans to be U.S. circuit judge for the Fifth Circuit. An inquiry found no proof, and Wisdom denied the charges in a public hearing as the nomination advances to the Senate for final confirmation.
Louisiana will accept bids Wednesday at Baton Rouge for the Pearl River link of U S 11, a 5.3 mile section joining Pearl River bridges. The 600 mile interstate plan features controlled access with interchanges and no at grade crossings, including two 24 foot concrete lanes and four bridges.
A Czech refugee family of four, Wilhelm Debner and his wife Anna with children Anna Marie and Willie, moved into a Topeka apartment after a welfare agency paid the first month's rent. They had disappeared from Denver a month earlier, left clues behind, and said they faced hardship adapting to the United States.

A burglar alarm sounded last night in Monroe triggering a police response. No break in or evidence of entry was found and there were no injuries.
Rainfall predicted for the northeast section of Louisiana today with continued warm weather. A sudden downpour hit Monroe with strong winds and light rain, flooding Fourth Street and water over sidewalks on DeSiard Street. Selman Field logged .37 inch for the period ending Sunday midnight.
The Atomic Energy Commission detonated its fifth and heftiest 1957 test atop Angels Peak Nevada. The blast ripped a door from a nearby blockhouse and cracked its wall 14 miles away while no injuries were reported at the control point. The shock dazzled daylight and was heard 300 miles away in Reno.
The Ouachita Parish Red Cross Chapter will elect officers and board members at tonight’s dinner meeting in the Virginia Hotel. Ralph J. Mitchell of the American Red Cross southeastern area will be main speaker. the event begins at 7 o clock. Mitchell joined the Red Cross staff in 1942.
Two Monroe Negro brothers Charlie Nash and Eddie Nash, ages 22 and 24, were jailed in Winnsboro on kidnapping charges after allegedly abducting 17 year old Kenneth L. Eubanks at gunpoint on Highway 15. The youth was dumped in Winnsboro unharmed after a high speed ride up to 110 mph and was later aided by night marshal Louie Boyle and Louisiana state police who stopped the car near Lafourche swamp with roadblocks and arrests.
At the 51st annual conference of attorneys general in Sun Valley Idaho Louis C Wyman of New Hampshire blasted Supreme Court rulings on the Smith Act saying they disarm efforts to curb subversive activity He urged steps to restore state influence and curb judicial legislation while labeling communism a mortal enemy of freedom.
Three boys admitted to fatally shooting Martin Daniels Sr. with a 30-30 rifle on a south Philadelphia stoop. The trio said the killing was revenge by Daniels’ son Martin Jr. after a quarrel, with Curtis Edwards and Albert Stolis aiding in the ambush. Edwards’ father, Grover Cleveland Edwards, had been executed in 1955 for a separate 1952 murder.
The Supreme Court postponed a decision on Louisiana’s offshore tidelands claim, citing related Gulf state interests. The court granted Alabama Florida Mississippi and Texas permission to intervene and noted Justice heads disqualified. Louisiana AG Jack Gremillion called the move a good omen.
Seventeen first place winners were chosen in model airplane contests held in Monroe on Sunday at Bernstein Park and Selman Field. Armand E. Breard, contest director, listed winners across A B C speeds and stunt divisions with participants from Monroe Longview Carthage Pineville and West Monroe. At Selman Field the Radio Controlled event under Lyle Ferguson saw 20 entries with Bob Crowley taking first in rudder and spot landing.
