In Hattiesburg Mississippi on June 24 two Olive Hill Kentucky Privates Wade E. McDowell and Leonard Romines of the 149th Infantry 38th Division were treated at Camp Shelby base hospital for wounds to the left hands. Capt J A Kehoe regimental adjutant said the rifle discharged accidentally while both men had their left hands over the gun barrel.
Moscow reported the Red army struck back along a Baltic to Black Sea front claiming 127 German planes down 300 tanks wrecked and 5 000 prisoners taken in two days while frontier towns Brest Litovsk Kolno and Lomza fell and German panzer columns surged into Ukraine and Bessarabia amid warnings against fifth columnists and panic mongers.

The Civil Aeronautics Board rejected Kansas City Southern Transport’s plan to run a direct Kansas City to New Orleans air line. It also refused Mid-Continent Airlines' bid to extend No 26 from Tulsa toward New Orleans and Braniff Airways' proposal to add Wichita to New Orleans service. The board noted existing routes already provide adequate service and no real time or mileage savings would occur.

Washington June 24 The house naval committee approved a bill to give statutory sanction to the national defense mediation board and allow President Roosevelt to order a 30 day status quo during a defense strike. The proposal would require striking workers to desist and forbid employers from changes in labor relations during the period. The measure, reported 11 to 8, replaces Vinson’s 30 day cooling off plan and aims for early house action.
Washington June 24. Robert Montgomery the movie actor with a naval reserve lieutenant’s commission since April volunteered for active training duty. He will report to the Navy Department July 1 for assignment in the office of naval operations. Training duty is typically brief, usually at least two weeks.

Supporters said aiding the Soviet would align with Britain's stance, allowing economic cooperation and possibly releasing frozen assets and easing material restrictions. The move aims to lessen Nazi power while maintaining ideological distance from communism and notes the trans-Siberian route closure reduces shipments to Germany.
Ed Apperson district chairman reports six parishes East Carroll Madison Tensas Caldwell Lincoln West Carroll have reached quotas for the United Service Organizations drive in the Fifth District. Additional parishes Ouachita Richland Morehouse Jackson and Franklin are nearing targets with a Monday night deadline looming and a possible short extension to finish the all-out campaign. The goal is high morale and rehabilitation of training personnel as the U S O provides facilities and wholesome activities. Ouachita Parish leader Henry Bernstein Jr. notes local drive heads toward the top and asks interested supporters to contact leaders or send donations to U S Headquarters Hotel Frances.

Thousands gather at the state fair grounds for an open air ceremony as a three day program begins focusing on youth family religion charity and labor. San Francisco June 24 A F L machinists were ordered to withdraw pickets from San Francisco shipyards to avert violence as the navy moves to end the 46 day strike by filling strikers jobs from civil service rolls. Pickets to stay away until tomorrow nights meeting when issues will be discussed. Bethlehem Shipbuilding to sign a closed shop contract for its San Francisco plant, aiding the A F L view. Rear Admiral Greenslade hopes machinists return to 11 plants with defense contracts totaling 500 million dollars. Police dispatched to Oakland to disperse lines near plants to aid registration of machinists as fed civil service employees.
On June 24 near Alexandria Louisiana the hard pressed Blue fifth army corps maneuvered to flank the Red invasion. The Reds had pushed 20 miles into the Leesville Kurthwood front but were repelled as the Blues shifted the 32nd division to the right and the 37th to the left. The 106th cavalry aided along the flanks as the 37th command post moved and a first prisoner arrived at 5th army HQ west of Camp Claiborne. The 32nd division held the right flank near Simpson with the 127th and 128th Wisconsin regiments nearby.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden in the House of Commons declared Soviet Russia an ally in the common task to defeat Germany. He urged Britain to set aside political disputes, said communism is not the issue, and noted mutual military and economic cooperation will guide the campaign. He reaffirmed Britain and Russia would redeem Poland’s pledge and described the Hitler regime as a cynical traitor to its word.
Thomas M. Gallagher, 32, was sentenced in Nassau county court to 10 to 20 years in Sing Sing for the slaying of John Gormley, 34, a riding master, at a February party in the Great Neck home of Mrs. Edward Gerken. Judge Cortland A. Johnson called Gallagher a "spoiled child" educated through 17 private schools after a May 29 conviction for first degree manslaughter.

Berlin reports German forces rescued British Brigadier Roger Lewin Taverner and four subordinates from a drifting rubber boat in the Bay of Biscay after their flying boat crashed on June 19 en route from England to Cairo. One major and three noncommissioned officers were among the survivors. nine others drowned. Dispatches noted a coast command flying boat was missing en route to the Mediterranean.
