Southern states plan new literacy test provisions expected to include both sections in upcoming laws. Legal analysts anticipate added requirements may affect voter eligibility and ballot access in forthcoming reforms.
Washington June 24 The Supreme Court decision validating grandfather clauses alarms Southern leaders who warn unscrupulous politicians will exploit the ruling to profit from illiteracy and race. Tennessee’s ballot methods are praised as a model to curb fraud and ensure white and Black voters are treated equally.
The passage argues that allowing ignorant whites and Africans to dominate district affairs is dangerous. It asserts many northern representatives sympathize with the South to block control by the easily swayed majority in some regions.
El Paso reports that Bishop Candena aged about 85 of the College of Nuestra Señora de Ocotlan at Tiazcala and the priests were killed on June 1 by Carranza troops commanded by Gen. Francisco Cos, per a letter received today.
A massive fire in the Cushing Oklahoma field scorched thirty one tanks, consuming more than 323000 barrels of oil. Firefighters used cannons to release oil into basins while only three tanks were saved. Major losses were reported by Gypsy Gulf and Prairie Oil and Gas companies.

The Monroe Chautauqua, a financial failure this year, may be held again after audience members guaranteed 210 season tickets. Other states plan annual Chautauquas with new programs, as the Alkahest organization provides a fresh lineup each year.
W Powell Hale, local director of the Alkahest Lyceum Bureau, lingered in Monroe during his stay. He introduced entertainers and gave readings and talks, charming locals. Hale homes in Jefferson City Tennessee and plans another Chautauqua in South Carolina. If Monroe remains in the circuit, residents hope for his return next season.

Robert Lansing, aged 51 from Watertown New York and Amherst graduate, was named Wednesday to succeed William Jennings Bryan as Secretary of State. He has advised President Wilson on international law and diplomacy and will take office after a recess appointment with Congress to reconvene for Senate confirmation.
States that Mr. Lansing, retained by the American government in important cases, has represented the United States in more international arbitrations than any other living American. French authority notes his long, broad experience in international tribunals. A son in law of John W. Foster, he became counsellor of the State Department and is Wilsons main stay on international law in recent negotiations. In Washington, he commands the respect of foreign cancellaries.
In Minneapolis on June 24, the Gunner Wennerberg statue dedication will mark the gift by Swedish Americans to the city. The Swedish consul presents the statue, Mayor Nye accepts, and Gov Hammond delivers remarks. Wennerberg hymns will be sung as a Swedish folk festival observes Midsummer Day.
