Violent storms batter the Midwest and Tennessee with floods and tornadoes. Nine dead and scores injured as Macon County residents are trapped by flash floods and a house swept into the Barren River near the Kentucky line. Authorities seek heavy rescue boats and report widespread damage.
Warren Earl Burger was sworn in as the 15th chief justice at 10 42 a.m. in a simple ceremony. President Nixon lauded Burger’s fairness, integrity and dignity as he noted the court’s continuity with change. Burger, 61, pledged to defend the Constitution and administer justice impartially before the term adjourned for summer.
Flood data for Camden and Monroe report river stages with Camden at 11.6 rising 5 units and Monroe at 12.5 falling 1 unit, indicating shifting conditions along the river.
Visiting the C J Stevens family on Rowland Road Monroe over the weekend were Bob Stevens from Rochelle Illinois and their families. The group visited members across Tennessee and Arkansas before continuing their trip.
The Associated Press reports weekend accidents across Louisiana killed ten people in traffic incidents. Victims include James O Betts Abbeville age unknown, Ethel Flink Winnsboro, and several others from Gibson Shreveport Scott Chalmette Covington Labadieville and Pointe Coupee Parish. A 10 year old pedestrian Ernest Fletcher Jr. died near Labadieville and Amanda Lee Carroll drowned at Old River in Pointe Coupee Parish. Three others were injured.
The Pentagon says 29500 men will be drafted in August while Army strength will drop by 13000 as part of troop withdrawals from Vietnam. About 8000 of 15000 coming out will not be replaced, and 5000 more terms will not be renewed, lowering global Army strength to just over 1.5 million with a $130 million budget saving. The return timetable includes 9th Division unit leaving July 8 and arriving at McChord AFB.
W. W. McDougall, chief aide to Gov. John McKeithen, is appointed Louisiana commissioner of administration. He replaces Dr. Bernard F. Sliger and will oversee budget control while remaining in his governor’s office. The move aims to align the governor’s office with state administrative operations.
New York reports a broad market retreat as concern over tight money and monetary restraint weighs on stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid to 867.96 at 1 p.m. after a 6.21 decline Friday, while the Associated Press average fell 2.5 points by noon with many of the 20 most active NYSE issues lower.

The Supreme Court in a 6 2 decision limited police authority by requiring warrants to search beyond the immediate area of an arrested suspect. The ruling overturns past precedents, limiting room searches and emphasizing Fourth Amendment protections.
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird announced the Pentagon will keep allowing siblings to serve aboard the same ship despite the loss of three brothers from the Evans disaster after the June 3 collision with an Australian carrier. He called repeated family deaths deeply regrettable but argued long term policy should not bar family service.
North Vietnamese forces attacked the besieged Ben Het camp in the central highlands. An estimated 24 000 enemy troops massed around the camp while U S air and artillery strikes continued. One American was killed and five wounded at the camp while 34 enemy soldiers died and 12 friendly casualties were reported nearby.
Chief Justice Earl Warren said four Supreme Court justices William J. Brennan Jr. Potter Stewart Byron R. White and Thurgood Marshall will comply with the Judicial Conference standards on off the bench activities. They indicated agreement in principle and intention to act accordingly following the June 10 rule forbidding outside fees for federal judges.
