Two Cuban Athletes Defect During San Juan Games
Two more Cuban athletes defect to seek asylum in the United States as the Central American and Caribbean Games near closing in San Juan Puerto Rico. Swimmer Francisco Marti Gonzales and track athlete Hector Rodriguez left their team and joined wrestler Juan Pablo Vega Romero who had defected earlier, with officials noting banished athletes may seek asylum while Cuban ministers deny orders to return. Marti has asylum and plans to live with his cousin in New York, saying Castro’s Cuba offers no future for youth.
