Soviets Plan Auto Production Hike
John Weyland reports from Moscow that the five year plan aims to raise Soviet auto production from 200000 to 800000 annually, build two new plants, introduce a small Zima model, remodel existing cars, and cut prices from four times Western levels while signaling a shift toward Western style life. Brezhnev and Kosygin back private cars as demand rises, despite Khrushchev’s earlier caution, amid longer waits and high prices for Moskvich and Volga models.

Exemption of Oil Equipment Passes House
The Louisiana House approved a bill 67 to 26 to exempt exploration equipment for oil and minerals from double sales tax when leased by the owner. Sponsor Rep. Salvador Anzelmo said the move avoids double taxation and would reduce state revenue by up to 50 thousand dollars annually. Opponents called it special interest legislation but Anzelmo argued broader issues cannot be solved immediately.
