Monroe city officials and the school board endorsed a bond sale totaling 6 million dollars to fund a new high school, two elementary schools, 86 classrooms, air conditioning, and improvements. The bid process follows a resolution by bonding attorney Harold Judell.

Two young men who boasted of seven killings died at the Kansas Prison after four years of failed appeals. George Ronald York, 22, of Jacksonville Florida, and James Douglas Latham, 23, of Mauriceville Texas, had a change of heart and expressed repentance as the gallows were sprung. York spoke of going home to heaven and forgiveness, while Latham said he bore no one ill. A chaplain read the 23rd Psalm before execution. The pair, high school dropouts who joined the Army, escaped from Ft. Hood in 1961 and terrorized several states with robberies and killings.

A 66 year old West Monroe woman Mrs Luther Eppinette died late Monday night from injuries in an accident on June 13. She was a passenger in a car driven by her husband. The couple was returning from church when their car collided at Pine and N 7th streets. She died at Glenwood Hospital after ongoing treatment. Funeral at First Baptist Church West Monroe 3 p.m. Wednesday with burial at Twin City Memorial Gardens. She leaves a husband four sons three daughters five sisters a brother eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. Pallbearers listed. She was active in the First Baptist Church and WMU. Body to remain at funeral home until 1 p.m. Wednesday.
A bomb heavily damaged the home of Julius Garagnani in a St. Louis suburb. Garagnani, business partner of former Cardinal Stan Musial, was targeted as police report dynamite sticks placed at the corner of the single-story brick house shattered the foundation and ruined the front. Musial arrived first at the scene. Garagnani's son John, 22, was in a restaurant at the time.

SHREVEPORT Louisiana AP A federal judge ordered the Northwest Louisiana Restaurant Club with more than 125 members to turn over its records for public inspection. Judge Ben Dawkins issued the order at the Justice Department’s request, saying the club may have been formed to circumvent desegregation provisions of the Civil Rights Act. Any applicant for membership can be blocked by one member’s vote.
A 72 hour nationwide strike in support of the rebel government appeared to have collapsed. Miguel Soto said police and army repression caused the poor response. A junta spokesman denied union leaders were arrested and workers forced back to work.
W E Whetstone says 3 million dollars in bonds will be sold Friday to fund two male dormitories and a cafeteria at Northeast State College. The State Board of Education meets in Baton Rouge to review bids, plans, and a proposed religion course.
West Ouachita's Democrats met at the Ouachita Parish library to elect officers and plan a membership drive. Officers named were Ada Gruber president L W Coon first vice president Hobson Norris second vice president Leo Walsworth secretary Jake Hennon treasurer Bill Norris parliamentarian. A barbecue is planned for August 7 on Chenier Lake as part of the drive.

Governor John J. McKeithen signed 55 fiscal session bills in Baton Rouge, bringing his total signed to about 155 with nine vetoes. Notable measures include a $140 million bond issue, a $911 million general appropriation bill, and pay raises for state officials. Effects take place June 28, funding districts and agencies such as sheriffs, deputies, assessors, DAs, and registrar staff. Aimed at rehabilitation efforts, the Crowley school for retarded child funding and a 65-plus teacher retirement fund provision also passed, alongside the Larose-Lafitte Toll Road Authority setup for Jefferson and Lafourche Parishes.
