In Baton Rouge the Louisiana House, led by Speaker Allen J. Ellender, debated half of the 16 million general state appropriations bill as a committee of the whole. Ellender urged no amendments and outlined administration reasons for recent tax measures.
New Louisiana Travelers' president H H B Stanley reports a prize radish garden on 705 North Fourth Street West Monroe with two bushels of radishes and assorted greens. A rattlesnake affair on Columbia road yields 16 rattlers aged about 18 years preserved by Tripp Faulk, Jr. A jail lodging shortage prompts ads for boarders at Monroe city jail as Frank Reitzell notes 46 negro inmates and no white inmates. Fishing boasts by Mrs. Frank Edney include 58 speckled perch weighing 2 1/2 pounds each. Charles C. Eady eats ham and eggs daily. Abe Arent hides a birthday, and Hubert Hollingsworth laments a tiny alligator at Black Bayou refused by the zoo.
The Grotto Better Baby health contest by Teflis Grotto drew about 200 mothers and their children to the Masonic temple for health examinations. Babies aged six months to four years were measured and examined as nurses watched. many giggled at the stethoscope while chaperoned crowds praised their dimples.
In Chicago on June 22, rival Louisiana groups led by Senator Huey P. Long and publisher John D. Ewing outlined plans to win floor recognition. Each branded the other's delegates improper and undemocratic, with Long accusing the Ewing side of a mass meeting selection and Ewing criticizing Long’s party loyalty and actions.
Judge Sander ruled the Ouachita parish school board contract with W C Salley to repair fire damage at the parish high school void. The decision cited lack of lawful advertisement and authority, noting later ratification might have cured the issues. Frank Masling, contractor, contended the bid was excess and not lawfully let.
Bloodhounds and a large posse hunted three armed bandits who robbed the Franklin State Bank and Trust branch at Baskin of 1000 dollars. A deputy sheriff was killed and several posse members wounded before the bandits fled toward Crockett's Point. A wounded female suspect, Mabel Beck, remained jailed in Winnsboro.
Judge R M Taliaferro of Harrisonburg will run for judge of the Louisiana second circuit court of appeals. He serves as district judge for Catahoula and Concordia parishes and has acted as temporary appeals court judge to clear the docket. He is regarded as a leading Louisiana jurist.
Baton Rouge June 22 Governor O K Allen signed four administration tax and budget balancing measures into law marking swift legislative action in the seventh week of the sixty day term. House leaders approved a wage hours bill limiting women to eight hours daily and forty eight weekly with exemptions for emergency work on perishables. The session saw a tie defeat on a measure to bar undated resignations of state appointees and several bills stalled in committee or defeated such as exempting airplanes from gasoline taxes.
Eleven hundred fifty pounds of tinfoil and 35 pounds of used razor blades were gathered by residents of Monroe West Monroe and northeast Louisiana over six months under a Monroe fire department program. The items were transported today in three automobiles to Shrine Hospital in Shreveport, packed in cigar boxes with rear seats removed.
