Attorney Says Rider Arrest Defied Federal Authority

New York attorney William M. Kunstler declared the arrest of Freedom Rider Elizabeth Porter Wyckoff in Jackson Mississippi as open defiance of federal authority. Wyckoff, a 45 year old writer and former Holyoke College professor, is jailed for refusing to pay a $200 fine from a June 2 incident.

Mild, Cloudy Weather Ahead for Northeast Louisiana

In Jersey City New Jersey two police officers were knifed while breaking up a threatened race riot between about 300 Negro and white residents in the Marion section. Three Negroes were arrested for disorderly conduct as clashes tied to the Marion Gardens project and nearby Italian American neighborhoods prompted church leaders to help calm the crowd.

Black Teen Pleads Guilty in White Girl Incident Gulfport

Ne gro Ervin M. Osborne, 22, of Biloxi, pleaded guilty to attempted reported incident with a 17 year old white girl on April 28 and faced a three year term in Harrison county court. Leonard Bailey, 18, of Gulfport pleaded innocent to injuring a minor girl on June 8 with trial set for July 5.

Negro Woodman Collins Is Sentenced to Death

Judge M. D. Miller Jr. sentenced 31 year old Woodman Collins of Iowa La to death for the aggravated rape of a Texas City Texas white woman. Defense lawyers were granted until July 31 to file an appeal to the U S Supreme Court. Collins was convicted April 19 for raping the woman near Woodlawn La more than a year ago.

Two Slain By Enraged Negro In Arkansas

In Malvern Arkansas a man fired a high powered rifle into an employment security office killing two white victims and wounding five others. The dead are Eloise Owens and Billy Lee Buie. Two wounded have tentative identifications as Phillip Dedman and Roe Akers. A suspect was reported to have been taken into custody before noon.
