Bell Asks Louisiana Rate Increase For Telephone Service

West Point cadet charged in West Monroe burglary attempt

William N. Holladay, 22, a three year West Point student, was jailed in Ouachita parish for attempted burglary at Evans and Son's Clothiers in West Monroe. He was nabbed on the roof after investigators tracked a skylight tamper and a ladder setup.

Rain Repeats With Heat In Northeast Louisiana Forecast

The northeast Louisiana forecast repeats a rain and heat pattern with partly cloudy skies and showers. Temperatures rise to the low to mid 90s tomorrow while tonight’s low runs 70 to 74. Selman Field reported 73 last night, rising to 82 by midmorning. Rain in the Twin Cities area measured .84 inch, and Monroe reached a high of 88, the season’s top for north Louisiana.

Traffic Count Runaway Couple Nabbed In Pa

Christiana Wennerstrom and 18 year old Huw Williams, a missing page, were found driving from Canada after a June 1 marriage in Charles Town West Virginia. Police halted their car near Allenwood, held them for failure to pay fines, and confirmed their identities with a justice of the peace. The girl is 16 and daughter of a Swedish official. Williams is a Senate page from Falls Church Virginia.

Channel Planning Funds Approved in Public Works Bill

The U S House passed a public works appropriation bill sending to the Senate. It includes 150 000 planning funds for a nine foot navigation channel on the Quachita river and a total of 58 950 000 for Mississippi river and tributaries projects including Boeuf river and Tensas basin continuations.

House Group Okays Most Of P. O. Requests

The House Appropriations Committee approved most of the Post Office Department funding requests to sustain normal service. It called for postal economies including Saturday service cuts and backed a supplemental 133 million dollar bill bringing total postal funding to 3.325 billion for the year starting July 1.

White Farmer Charged With Killing Negro Airman

Raiford Walton a 50 year old white farmer with a prior manslaughter conviction was charged with murder after shooting 20 year old Negro airman Charles Brown at Walton’s sister’s farm near Yazoo City Mississippi Walton admitted firing the shotgun hit Brown in the head as the airman sat at a dining table The shooting occurred during a 30 day leave Brown had with Barksdale Air Force Base sheriff and county attorney described the scene and said relatives present provided little information about the visitor’s conduct

Two Seamen Killed as FDR Steam Explosion Strikes

On the carrier Franklin D. Roosevelt off Florida a live steam blast from a high speed pump killed two seamen and burned five more. Navy reports 29 others treated for heat prostration while crew aided by heroic rescues. The dead are Bobby E. Hyder and Sidney R. Wall. seriously injured include Donald E. Brockman Phillip R. Plantier and Richard M. Haigh. A Navy board investigates the cause.

Court Denies Delays in Hoffa Trial Bribery Case

The U S Court of Appeals refused further postponement in the bribery conspiracy trial of Teamsters Union Vice President James R Hoffa. The case, with Miami attorney Hyman I Fischbach, centers on alleged efforts to bribe access to Senate Rackets Committee files. A three judge panel heard defense arguments before denying the motion.
