New York June 20. Bookmaker Frank Erickson pled guilty to gambling counts to seek mercy at sentencing next Monday. He could face 1 to 5 years for each of 59 counts and 60 total years with fines up to 30,000. DA Hogan seeks the stiffest sentence while Erickson preserves anonymity of bettors in his massive empire. New Jersey authorities will investigate his activity there. Hogan offers evidence to other agencies and a senate gambling subcommittee.
In Moscow on June 20 the supreme Soviet unanimously approved Premier Joseph Stalin's government to remain in power. The joint houses backed resolutions from a Stockholm world peace congress calling for prohibition of atomic weapons and branding first-using officials as war criminals. The assembly also expressed confidence in ongoing Soviet peacemaking within the United Nations and abroad. Nikolai M. Shvernik was re elected chairman of the supreme Soviet presidium. The semi annual session, lasting a week, also approved the 1950 Soviet budget.
Alex C. Lea well known local barber and Central District Field Cub commissioner of Boy Scouts was unanimously elected commander of L. B. Faulk Post No. 13 American Legion at the annual election of officers held Monday night. Lea, a veteran of 21 months service in Hawaii, was discharged October 21, 1945, and will attend the National Boy Scout Jamboree as a leader from Ouachita Valley council.
Vienna reports Hungary offers to exchange imprisoned American businessman Robert A Vogeler for the crown of St Stefan, held by the western Allies. Vogeler, aged 39, was jailed Feb 21 for spying and sabotage. British associate Edgar Sanders got 13 years. The U S has refused Hungary's demands, citing Vatican influence and the travel ban. The crown’s medieval connection to Hungary’s apostolic kings underscores the high stakes of the negotiations.
Columbus, June 20. National and state Democratic leaders reacted with surprise to Gov. Frank Lausche’s remark that he had not decided whether to back the Democratic candidate against Senator Robert A. Taft. Lausche, seeking a third term, said he would vote for the candidate he believed would serve the nation best. Party officials publicly backed freedom of choice, while privately the tone carried sarcasm.

Democratic tax law managers push a bill to cut excise taxes by 1.01 billion annually while boosting corporate taxes to prevent a veto. The Ways and Means Committee approved 433 million in new taxes, with quick passage expected next week before July 31 adjournment.

Alfred Dean Slack, 44, of Syracuse, accused of wartime espionage for Soviet Russia, left Utica under heavy guard bound for Tennessee. Slack claimed good treatment and, when asked, would not deny innocence. FBI notes say he admitted giving explosive samples to a contact for delivery to Russia.

Britain stayed on the sidelines but may join. delegates discussed political benefits and future inclusion.
A coroner's jury investigates the sledge hammer killings of Mrs. Henry F. Bahns and three children Eldon 20 Ardith 14 and Helen 8 and the drowning of the father Henry F. Bahns 49 in a field well near Leigh Nebraska. Authorities believe the father killed the family then took his own life.

W B Libely, tenant on a six and a half acre tract on Harold Woods place eight miles north of Monroe on the Sterlington road, brought in a fine BPL-15 cotton bloom Tuesday morning. It was planted April 20.
A 61 year old woman desk clerk, Norma Chambers, was brutally beat and robbed of about 200 dollars at the Louisiana Hotel shortly after 2 30 am Tuesday. She was rushed to Charity Hospital with a possible fractured jaw and facial injuries. Police seek the unidentified assailant, described as tall and dark headed, who was in the lobby about 10 minutes before the attack. The robbed amounts totaled 187.50 from the hotel safe and 11 85 from the cash register. Chambers said the robber demanded money or he would kill her and appeared intoxicated. The hotel manager, T M Tucker, said Chambers had only worked there two weeks and listed Keokake Iowa as her home. No weapon was found.
State law allows a registrant who moved within the same parish to vote in the old precinct if not transferred, with a three month window after removal. If a move occurred before April 25, change registration to the new precinct. otherwise visit the parish registrar. Quachita parish residents must register by Saturday June 24 for the July 25 primaries.
