In Shreveport Louisiana testimony opened in an injunction suit against Mary Bryce registrar of voters as recall supporters push to remove Representative Wark Hughes. George Alsace for the recall group admitted 179 withdrawal petitions signatures were genuine prompting 31 witnesses to be excused.
The Ohio Oil Company has filed a writ to block Louisiana severance tax. Gov Huey P. Long and state officials discussed the case at a conference in New Orleans. The 1928 severance tax law is challenged as unconstitutional, risking substantial funds for the state and its educational system.
Chicago news reports Casimir Litnickas slain by blows to the skull. Neighbor Anthony Kazulio admits the hammer murder saying Litnickas was told he was too old to live. Police debate the death penalty as Kazulio contends he is only 37.
In New Orleans on June 20 Alex Lataxes 19 faces manslaughter charges over a truck crash death of Robert Ricker 17 at a local hospital. Police say Lataxes Motor Freight Lines driver and Ricker his helper were riding in a narrow street when a parked car crushed Ricker as they passed. Reckless driving and failure to report an accident also charged. Two unidentified men later brought Ricker to the hospital after 3 a m with a crushed chest but gave no details or names.
The Senate finance committee, amid a Washington summer heat, debates the tariff bill passed by the House as members endure vacation. Over two months, witnesses will be heard to study the measure, with August 19 set for the Senate to resume consideration of President Hoover's last recommendation at the special session. Earlier, a Senate prohibition clash and a House vote on delaying maturity of the 400 million dollar French war supplies debt dominated the day.

Dr. J. L. Kelly of Oak Ridge is appointed by Gov. Huey P. Long to the Louisiana state board of health representing the fifth district. The announcement was made in Baton Rouge on June 20.

Two young brothers Igancio Ceniceros and Bartolo Ceniceros died after a gas released near an oil refinery spread through a district. Eighteen others were hospitalized with gas exposure. some may die. Rescue efforts faced difficulty as the gas lingered low and residents fled. Animals died and doctors warned mental impacts on survivors.
Douglass Duff of Alto fired a 22-rifle at what he thought were waves in the Boeuf river near Alto. Alfred Roberts, 14, was wounded while fishing with his brother. he was taken to St. Francis sanitarium and was not seriously injured.

Felix J. Mouton of Lafayette announced he would not enter the third district Democratic congressional primary. He pledged his support to Numa F. Monteto Thibodaux, who led the primary.
Delta Air Service Inc enlarged its capitalization to 250000 with 125000 paid in and absorbed the Fox Flying Service of Bastrop. John Fox joined the Delta board as the Huff-Daland lineage aims to expand dusting operations in three southern states and daily passenger runs from Monroe to Jackson and west to Port Arthur and Dallas.
