Tojo Trial Hearing Cites Education Role In War Drive
Testimony from Kyoto University dean Yukioki Takikawa says military training officers controlled Japan’s schools after Manchurian incident, shaping students to oppose free thought. Tribunal president Sir William Webb calls the line of evidence not very helpful and urges thinning the 28 education phase witnesses to speed proceedings. He notes witnesses’ affidavits may speed the trial while personal cross examination remains.

House Committee Advances Social Security Tax Hike Plan
Washington June 19 The House Ways and Means Committee began drafting a bill proposing a 50 percent increase in social security taxes for employers and employees. The panel also approved blanket coverage for World War II veterans under old age and survivors insurance for three years at no cost to veterans and moved to broaden the program to about 20 million more workers including farm laborers and domestic staff. If enacted, widows and dependents of a veteran who dies within three years of discharge would receive about 25 dollars monthly per child, with benefits lasting until 18 for children and widow until the last child turns 18.
