Acquittal for Julius Petro Cites Religion Over Crime

Julius Petro of Cleveland was acquitted of first degree murder after a retrial in which a common pleas jury deliberated 13 hours. He had spent 19 months on death row after a prior conviction for the 1946 shooting of Theodore Knaus, a verdict later overturned by Ohio Supreme Court. Petro credited faith with his acquittal and pledged to live lawfully in his father’s furniture business. He noted past crimes and death-row lessons, while the jury foreman cited police frailties in the case.
