Robert M. Coon, son of Mrs. N. J. Worley Sr., reenlists in the United States Air Force after selection for career status. He serves as an inventory management specialist at Craig AFB, Alabama. A 1973 West Monroe High School graduate, his father is M. L. Coon of Monroe.
President Carter selected Walter Mondale for vice president from six finalists after delaying the choice amid questions from supporters and rivals. Carter cited shared compatibility and pledged to give the VP major responsibility while ensuring Mondale would help win the fall election.
Area residents will gain about $1.9 million in Social Security and SSI benefits over the next 12 months under the new cost of living tied schedule. The increase affects 37 million people nationwide and costs $5.5 billion over the year.
Monroe City officials and a Citizens Energy Committee reached agreement on an 18 month natural gas contract with William Brown. Starting price is $1.60 per thousand cubic feet, rising to $1.77 by contract end. The deal uses about 15 million cubic feet from Brown's supply and follows prior curtailment orders affecting other suppliers.
A Hodge man, Clentis De Maxwell, was killed in a two-vehicle crash about seven miles northeast of Jonesboro. Maxwell reportedly crossed the centerline and struck a pickup driven by James A. Speights. Speights was treated and released from Jackson Parish Hospital. Coroner Betts Stevenson declared Maxwell dead at the scene. no charges filed.
Minnesota delegate Edward Benson cast his ballot for Fred Stover 77 president of the CS Farmers Association and editor of the US Farm News at the Democratic National Convention. Benson, from Appleton, noted Stover’s farm focus and questioned the party’s record on farmer incomes.
Riverside gauge shows rising flood levels with station in flood stage. Data indicate stage around 1.9 feet rise at monitoring site cited as Monroe and San iden area with uncertain readings.
Ouachita Parish principals and teachers oppose channeling one half cent sales tax proceeds to supervisors. The Monroe City School Board already allocated funds to central office supervisors, while local boards await a formal attorney general opinion. The group cites the 1968 measure language defining teachers to exclude supervisors and argues pay scales and allocations distinguish classroom teachers and principals from supervisory staff.
