Official Thinks Convicts Drowned
SAN FRANCISCO AP A prison official said he believes three bank robbers who fled Alcatraz drowned. Fred T Wilkinson assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons declined to comment on reports of a raft or two paddles and on a swim by two experienced distance swimmers from Alcatraz to Angel Island. The missing convicts Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin fled The Rock after chiseling ventilator covers and climbing to the roof, then into the bay with two miles of tide. Wilkinson said the men would commit other crimes to survive and that there is no sign of life.
