Philadelphia Phillies star first baseman Eddie Waitkus was shot in the Edgewater Beach Hotel Chicago by Ruth Ann Steinhagen a 19 year old. She admitted firing a .22 rifle saying I have a surprise for you and later told police she was sorry she shot him but did not know why. Waitkus was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital in serious condition with a chest wound and underwent stitches though probing for a pellet was not done.
